Algerian Boxer Khelif receives hero's welcome
Algerian Olympic Champion and boxing gold medalist Imane Khelif including teenage gymnastics gold medalist Kaylia Nemour and bronze medalist Djamel Sedjati were welcomed with cheers at Algiers Airport on Monday.
Khelif, who won the women’s 66kg boxing event once said that she had to win for her country’s women, has become center of a gender controversy during the Paris Olympics.
"I wanted to show the strength of performance and the presence of women in general, and Algerian women in particular." Khelif said.
The International Olympic Committee took charge over the boxing competition in Paris after losing patience with the International Boxing Association. IBA had disqualified Khelif along with Taiwan’s Lin Yu Ting from its world championship last year claiming they are ‘males’ based on their respective test. The IBA had allowed both boxers to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
Addressing the controversy, Imane spoke out against what she termed a “relentless campaign” and she thanked the Algerian people for the unwavering support during the Paris Olympics.
"Algerian women are an example and a model for the whole world, "Thanks to God, we have restored Algeria's honor and flown the Algerian flag in Paris, which is the most important thing." Khelif added.
The momentous achievement of Imane Khelif along with her fellow olympians have inspired significant national pride in Algeria. Her success has not only put Algeria on the map but has also highlighted the determination and capability of its athletes particularly its women.
