A Quiet Legend in the Making

Known as a silent operator, Hubalde built a legacy not through fanfare but through consistent excellence, smart plays, and championship-caliber performance across 16 seasons in the PBA.

Basic Information:

  • Full Name: Alfredo Hubalde

  • 1988: Purefoods Hotdogs
  • 1988–1989: Formula Shell
  • 1990: Añejo Rhum 65

Achievements & Honors:

  • PBA pioneer
  • 1977 PBA Most Valuable Player
  • 16 PBA Championships (13 with Crispa, 3 with Tanduay)
  • 2× Grand Slam Champion (1976, 1983)
  • 3× PBA Mythical First Team
  • Named to the PBA’s 25, 40, and 50 Greatest Players lists
  • 1973 NCAA Most Valuable Player (Mapúa Red Cardinals)
  • 1974 Asian Youth Championship Gold Medalist (Philippines)

Before turning professional, Hubalde made waves as a standout for the Mapúa Red Cardinals, where he was named NCAA Most Valuable Player in 1973. The following year, he helped the national youth team capture gold in the 1974 Asian Youth Championship, signaling his potential on a bigger stage.

His professional career officially began in 1975 as one of the founding players of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), joining the powerhouse Crispa Redmanizers. He quickly proved himself as a reliable contributor on both ends of the floor. Though he played in the shadows of stars like Bogs Adornado and Atoy Co, Hubalde's quiet yet consistent presence made him indispensable to Crispa's success.

In 1977, following back-to-back MVP wins by Adornado, Hubalde stepped into the spotlight by capturing the league’s highest individual honor—the PBA Most Valuable Player award. That same year, he was also named to the Mythical First Team, affirming his place among the PBA’s elite.

The Silent Operator

Hubalde’s playing style reflected his personality—calm, deliberate, and focused. Known for his off-the-glass jumpers, undergoal stabs (fondly referred to as “dukot”), and smooth perimeter shooting, he was a constant threat on offense. Even as the game evolved, Hubalde adapted, adding range to his shot and refining his back tap technique on defense—a clever move to strip opponents of the ball from behind.

He wasn’t flashy, but his basketball IQ, composure, and ability to deliver in clutch moments made him a coach’s dream and a teammate’s asset.

When Crispa disbanded in 1984, Hubalde and teammate Abet Guidaben transferred to Tanduay Rhum Makers, helping reshape the team’s trajectory. The following year, a pivotal trade brought Ramon Fernandez into the fold, launching a new era for Tanduay.

In 1986, Hubalde was instrumental in leading the team to its first PBA championship during the Reinforced Conference. With players like Willie Generalao, Jayvee Yango, Padim Israel, and imports Rob Williams and Andre McKoy, Tanduay finally tasted glory. That success was followed by another title in the All-Filipino Conference, where Hubalde famously sank two clutch free throws in the dying moments to defeat Robert Jaworski's Ginebra San Miguel.

Tanduay went on to claim a third title in the 1987 Open Conference, led by import David Thirdkill, giving Hubalde his 16th and final PBA championship—making him second only to Fernandez in career titles.

Lasting Legacy and Personal Life

Hubalde retired in 1990, leaving behind a legacy of quiet dominance and championship pedigree. In recognition of his career, he was named to the PBA’s 25 Greatest Players list in 2000, and later to the 40 and 50 Greatest as well—testament to the enduring respect he commands within the basketball community.

He also passed on the love of the game to his sons, Frederick “Derrick” Hubalde and Paolo Hubalde, both of whom followed in his footsteps as professional basketball players.

Freddie Hubalde may not have always commanded the headlines, but his resume speaks volumes. An MVP, a 16-time champion, and a player who thrived in any system he joined—he is, without a doubt, one of the true greats of Philippine basketball. In a league filled with stars and showmen, Hubalde earned his spot in history with consistency, humility, and pure basketball brilliance.

Gilas Boys Win FIBA 3x3 Stop 3 Title

Gilas Pilipinas Boys beats Japan, 19-14, in the 2026 FIBA 3x3 Nations League Asia 2 finals in the Stop 3 final on Wednesday at Hextar World Empire City in Malaysia.

The Philippines secured their title triumph through strong teamwork, efficient offensive scoring, and control of the game's tempo. Gilas built an 18-10 cushion behind timely baskets and maintained its composure to close out the championship match, showcasing the depth that fueled its unbeaten Stop 3 run.

Cabs Cabonilas emerged as the Player of the Game after he contributed seven points in the final. The Gilas standout also played a crucial role throughout Stop 3, which he tallied 11 points against New Zealand and 10 more against Singapore to spearhead the Philippines' title-winning campaign.

Japan tried to keep the team within striking distance throughout the final and helped the squad stay competitive despite facing a double-digit deficit.

Despite their resilience, the team struggled to match the Philippines' scoring pace in the closing stages. Unable to contain Gilas Pilipinas' balanced attack, they found it difficult to generate consistent offense.

With the victory, Gilas moved into a tie with Belarus atop the conference standings with 240 points apiece, and will return to action in Stop 4 on Friday against New Zealand and Malaysia.

Cambodia pulls off upset against Alas Pilipinas

Cambodia stunned Alas Pilipinas in five sets, 25-23, 28-30, 25-20, 22-25, 15-8, to open its SEA V Cup campaign on a high note Wednesday at the Candon City Arena and deal the host nation an early setback in the tournament.

Despite the loss, newcomer Joshua Magalaman delivered an impressive performance for the Philippines, finishing with 21 points built on 15 attacks, four blocks, and two aces.

Jude Garcia also shone for Alas Pilipinas with 20 points on 18 attacks, one block, and one ace, providing a steady offensive presence throughout the match.

The Philippines struggled to maintain its momentum in crucial stretches, particularly in the deciding fifth set where Cambodia pulled away. Alas also committed untimely errors and failed to contain Cambodia’s attack, allowing the visitors to dictate the pace when it mattered most.

Cambodia, meanwhile, capitalized on its opportunities through efficient attacking and resilient defense. The Cambodians remained composed during extended rallies and key moments, showcasing the confidence that helped them secure one of the biggest wins in their recent history.

Veasna Voeum emerged as the Player of the Game after erupting for 33 points on 28 attacks, three blocks, and two aces to lead Cambodia’s breakthrough victory.

Cambodia is set to face reigning AVC Men's Cup champ Indonesia today, July 16, before taking on the home team on Friday. Alas is also on the verge of a must-win situation on the tournament against Indonesia.

Alas Boys in AVC U18 vs Bahrain (Credits POC)

Alas Boys Beat Bahrain, Stays in Contention in AVC U18

The Alas Pilipinas Boys bounced back from their opening-day defeat with a 25-22, 13-25, 25-23, 25-14 victory over Bahrain in the 2026 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Boys’ U18 Championship on Monday at the Wuyuan River Gymnasium in Haikou, China.

The win improved the Philippines to a 1-1 record in Pool B and kept its quarterfinal hopes alive. The Filipinos will face India on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in a crucial match, with the winner joining unbeaten Iran (2-0) in the next round.

Only the top two teams from each of the tournament’s four pools will advance to the quarterfinals.

Despite having just six weeks to prepare for the championship, head coach Oliver Balse was pleased with the team’s poise and response after Saturday’s straight-set loss to Iran.

“What was different today was their confidence,” Balse said. “I’m happy with how they performed. The team was more focused, and you could see how badly they wanted to win, especially in the third set.”

The Philippines regained control of the match in the pivotal third frame. After a 16-all deadlock, Alas launched a 6-4 run behind Terrence Marticion and Raphael Galapin to build a 22-20 advantage.

Bahrain threatened late as Mohamed Haram sparked a 3-0 run to trim the deficit to 24-23, but a net violation handed the Philippines the set and a 2-1 lead.

Alas then dominated the fourth set from start to finish, cruising to a 25-14 win to avoid a deciding fifth frame.

Marticion led the Philippines with 16 points on 15 attacks and one block, while Galapin and Guerra chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Mohamed Haram paced Bahrain with 18 points, while Nasralla Haram added 16.

Bahrain will also take on Iran on Tuesday.

Elsewhere in the tournament, South Korea (2-0) and Japan (1-0) lead their pool, while Saudi Arabia (0-2) and Australia (0-1) remain in pursuit. In Pool A, host China and Chinese Taipei are among the early contenders, while Pakistan strengthened its position atop Pool C with a perfect 2-0 record.

NLEX Beats Dyip, Claims Second Win in PBA Governor's Cup

NLEX Road Warriors survived a hard-fought battle against Terrafirma Dyip, 101-100, in the PBA Governor's Cup last night, at the Ynares Center.

NLEX controlled the game in the first three quarters, not until Terrafirma attempted a comeback in the final frame.

Terrafirma managed to trim their deficit by outscoring the Road Warriors 33-11, including Justin Strings' mid-range jumper to cut the lead in just one point in the 4th quarter.

NLEX held their composure on defense in the final seconds, and Geo Chiu's successful offensive rebound already ran out of time to put a quality bucket, which secured the Road Warriors' victory.

DeQuan Jones led his team with 30 points, while Schonny Winston and Robert Bolick added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Under new head coach Jimmy Alapag, the Road Warriors improved to 2-0 in the conference. They are scheduled to face Titan Ultra Giant Risers on July 14.
