For nearly three decades, Ricky Ricafuente has had the privilege of participating in international basketball competitions. With extensive expertise on the international stage, he shares his insights into what it takes to succeed in global basketball and how his experience can contribute to his team’s performance.

One of the key lessons he has learned over the years is that success in international basketball requires more than just raw talent. While speed, sharp shooting, and agility are essential, discipline and execution are equally important.

According to Ricafuente, international basketball requires sharp decision-making, seamless passing, and precise shooting—skills he is eager to share with his teammates.

"Perhaps the most valuable contribution I can offer is helping the team execute the plays when Coach Arlene [Rodriguez] teaches something new," he shared in an exclusive interview with Scoreline.ph.

At 49 years old, Ricafuente is still performing at a high level, something he attributes to his unwavering discipline.

“Without discipline, I wouldn’t be able to keep playing at this level,” the two-time Brunei Cup MVP shared.

Maintaining a strict fitness regimen and taking care of his body has allowed him to continue competing at the top of his game, despite the natural challenges that come with aging.

Ricafuente also commended his teammates for their discipline and unwavering dedication during practice. After recovering from an injury, the veteran player returned to the team uncertain of his role.

However, he was quickly impressed by the players' commitment and focus. Many of the plays being run felt familiar to him, resembling strategies he had executed throughout his career.

Beyond his individual success, the Technological Institute of the Philippines product is committed to inspiring the next generation of players. He actively mentors younger athletes, passing on his knowledge and experience.

“The number one thing is discipline. Second, if you love basketball, take care of yourself. When you take care of your body, basketball will continue to be part of your life, no matter your age,” he explained. “It’s not just about exercise; it keeps you healthy and provides motivation to all the players, especially the younger ones.”

This year, Ricafuente will once again represent Masters Pinoy Pilipinas Basketball in the 2025 Summer World Masters Games in Taiwan, set to take place from May 17 to 30.

He invites all Filipinos in Taiwan to come out and support the team, emphasizing that every game represents not just the players, but the pride of the entire nation.

"I’m inviting our fellow Filipinos, especially in Taiwan, to watch us in the upcoming matches of Team Pilipinas from May 17 to May 30,” Ricafuente said in Filipino.

“Hopefully, our fellow Filipinos there, if you have some free time, we’re counting on your support for the team because it's not just our names on our backs that we carry, but also the Philippines, our country,” he added.

“So thank you to our fellow Filipinos, and we hope to see you there!,” Ricafuente concluded.

With his dedication and passion for the game, Ricafuente continues to prove that age is just a number when it comes to pursuing greatness in basketball.
