Isaiah Africano poses for Scoreline.ph during the PBA 50th Rookie Draft

Isaiah Africano joins Guam National Team for FIBA WCA Qualifiers

Another Filipino standout is set to compete against Gilas Pilipinas, this time wearing the colors of Guam. Filipino-American guard Isaiah Africano, who went undrafted in the recent PBA Season 50 Rookie Draft, has earned a spot on Guam’s men’s national basketball team for the upcoming FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.Africano’s inclusion was confirmed through a social media announcement from his agent, Rey Punongbayan of Punongbayan Ponceja Sports Management, who praised his player’s perseverance and drive. “My player Isaiah Africano, who went undrafted in the last PBA Draft, threw his anger by making it into the Guam National Basketball Team that will battle Gilas Pilipinas. Proved them all wrong, Isaiah! ” Punongbayan wrote. The 6-foot-2 guard joins San Miguel Beermen veteran Jericho Cruz, forming a duo of Filipino-blooded players on Guam’s roster. Africano appears on the official lineup alongside Mark Johnson, Tomas Calvo, Jon Galloway, Daren Hechanova, and Tai Wesley as the 81st-ranked nation prepares to challenge Gilas Pilipinas later this month.Africano’s journey has been anything but easy. The Hawaii-born Fil-Am guard, whose mother hails from Sto. Domingo, from Ilocos Norte and whose father is Colombian, was in Manila two months ago in pursuit of his PBA dream. After going undrafted and missing out on roster spots as a rookie free agent, he faced uncertainty about his path. That changed when Guam head coach EJ Calvo saw value in the high-energy guard, particularly his defense, hustle, and competitiveness. Calvo moved quickly to secure Africano for the national squad, giving the 28-year-old his first major international opportunity.Africano said that being at this level was already a blessing, reflecting on his basketball journey that began in Pearl City, Hawaii, and continued through Division III basketball at Pacific University in Oregon, adding that he wants to look back knowing he did everything he could and to maximize the talent God has given him.Africano describes himself as a defensive-minded, high-energy player, qualities that Guam hopes will strengthen its backcourt rotation alongside Cruz.Guam will face Gilas Pilipinas on November 28 at the University of Guam Calvo Field House, creating an intriguing subplot as two players with Filipino roots suit up for the opposing side. For Africano, it may be the closest he gets to facing PBA-level talent after narrowly missing his chance to join the league earlier this year.Yet despite the turns in his career, Africano remains motivated by the support of his family. “My parents always told me I could do anything as long as I put my heart into it,” he shared with Scoreline.ph during the PBA Draft Combine. “I have always gravitated toward team basketball. This is another opportunity to prove what I can do.”With talent, energy, and a renewed opportunity, Isaiah Africano enters the Asian Qualifiers ready to make his mark, representing Guam on the international stage against the very nation of his heritage.

Seventeen of the Philippines’ top billiards players are set to battle for the coveted Crown Jewel of Nineball as the World Pool Championship kicks off Monday at the Green Halls in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.Led by former world champion Carlo Biado and 2023 semifinalist Johann Chua, the Philippines will field the largest contingent in the 128-man field, all gunning for a piece of the record-setting prize pool for the champion. Chua and Biado headline the campaign as they look to deliver the country’s fifth world title, following in the footsteps of Filipino legends Efren “Bata” Reyes (1999), Ronnie Alcano (2006), Francisco “Django” Bustamante (2010), and Biado himself, who lifted the trophy in 2017 and finished runner-up in 2018.Joining them are veterans James Aranas, Lee Vann Corteza, and Roland Garcia, alongside emerging stars AJ Manas, Anton Raga, Bernie Regalario, and Jefrey Roda. Also flying the flag are Michael Feliciano, Jeffrey Ignacio, Michael Baoanan, Marvin Asis, Alexis Ferrer, Mark Kalagayan, and Marlon Caneda. The road to the title, however, won't be easy. Captain Nica Celis of the UP Fighting Maroons Women's Volleyball Team

Nica Celis aims to helm Fighting Maroons' escape from bottom spot

Leading a flock of talent-rich individuals would have been an easy task for a captain, but for someone guiding a team that is attempting to break into the Final Four of the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Tournament, it would be a handful task.It has been 43 years since the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons Women’s Volleyball Team emerged as victors in the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Tournament. It would seem like a punch to the moon to even reach the Final Four as the squad last made it in 2017. It was a reminder for the newly-minted captain Dannica Celis that the trophy has been elusive for the Maroon school for four decades as their best-place finish has consistently been third. As captain, Celis emphasizes that winning one game at a time is more important than reaching the Final Four. She acknowledges the long-standing gap since their championship win, and while it serves as motivation, her team's current approach is centered on gradual improvement and individual growth that will contribute to collective success.

Japanese boxer scores a remarkable victory in Bangkok at age 50

Veteran Japanese fighter Toshihiko Era of Osaka has etched his name into the record books as the oldest boxer to win an Asian boxing championship, after stopping Thailand’s Komgrich Nantapech to capture the WBF (World Boxing Foundation) Asia Flyweight Title in a thrilling bout held in Bangkok. At 50 years old, Era displayed remarkable skill, stamina, and determination—marking a historic milestone for Asian boxing, especially in his home country, Japan. The opening round was evenly matched, but Era, who now holds a record of 26-4-1 with 21 KOs, quickly found his rhythm. By the second and third rounds, he was landing crisp combinations and effectively pressuring Nantapech against the ropes. The contest came to an end at the start of the fourth round when Nantapech’s corner opted not to continue, handing Era a technical stoppage victory. The bout was officiated by referee Kris Sanyadej of Bangkok, with Alvin S. Go of Cavite, Philippines, serving as the official WBF supervisor.Era’s victory is a powerful statement—age is not a limit when discipline, belief, and perseverance are in place. While legends like George Foreman captured a heavyweight world title at 45, and Bernard Hopkins secured the IBF light heavyweight crown at 49, Era has now joined this elite company by becoming the oldest fighter to win an Asian title at 50.His win is more than just a personal triumph—it is a shining example of what can be achieved through faith, healthy living, and relentless dedication. This extraordinary feat is sure to inspire not just aspiring boxers, but athletes and fans across generations. Toshihiko Era’s story is a testament to the unyielding spirit of the sport, proving once again that boxing is as much about heart as it is about youth.Congratulations to the Toshihiko Era on this historic and inspirational victory. Cloanne Mondonedo

Player Profile Series: Clo Mondoñedo’s journey to setter glory

Long before she took the helm as captain of ZUS Coffee and earned the prestigious titles of NCAA Season 99 Best Setter and Most Valuable Player, Cloanne Mondoñedo never imagined her path would unfold the way it did. Her story wasn’t shaped by certainty, but by detours, doubt, and the quiet power of unexpected opportunities. Growing up in Oriental Mindoro, Mondoñedo explored almost every sport she could find. She initially dabbled in athletics, then shifted to table tennis—her father’s sport—and even gave football a try, but it wasn’t until a school intramural event that her curiosity for sports transformed into a true passion. She recalled stepping onto the volleyball court for the first time, completely unsure of herself, until a teacher recognized a spark in her and told her she had potential—worlds that would quietly shape her future.Encouraged by her mother, a former volleyball player, Mondoñedo began competing in local leagues, though her progress remained gradual. As she advanced to larger meets and provincial competitions, the harsh reality of high-level play set in. There were moments she didn’t even get the chance to step on the court—a humbling experience that left her on the bench, reflecting in silence and building quiet determination.Rather than giving up, she trained harder, secured better gear, and poured herself into a sport that had yet to fully welcome her. Her perseverance finally bore fruit when she earned a spot in the prestigious Palarong Pambansa—where her evolving talent caught the eye of a coach who would soon redefine her path.
