Cignal posts third straight win, overcomes Choco Mucho
Cignal kept their record unblemished despite the third-set stumble to end Choco Mucho's two-game winning streak, 25-18, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, in the 2024-25 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference on Thursday, November 28, at Philsports Arena in Pasig.
Five HD Spikers finished in double digits, including playmaker Gel Cayuna, as they tied sister team PLDT with identical 3-0 records at the top of the standings.
Four-time Best Setter Cayuna recorded 16 excellent sets while also producing 11 points, including seven attacks, three blocks, and one ace against the Flying Titans.
"Very thankful and blessed of course because earlier the battle was intense. Of course, the team is very happy and proud because I can see how tired they are, especially when Choco Mucho moved really well, which is what we expected," Cignal coach Shaq delos Santos said.
The HD Spikers' leading scorer, Jackie Acuña delivered 14 markers, five of which came from blocks, Ces Molina tallied 13 points, while Vanie Gandler and Riri Meneses contributed 10 apiece.
Despite Roselyn Doria's absence, Cignal's depth was evident. Key players like Cayuna, Molina, and Gandler performed well when it counted, and the team's strength as a whole was demonstrated by the contributions of players from all across the roster.
The HD Spikers now have eight days of break before flying to Cebu to face Nxled on December 7.
Sisi Rondina, who finished with 24 points, and Dindin Manabat made great plays during their team's brief comeback, but they were unable to overcome a determined Cignal.
Rondina also hammered 22 attacks, two service aces, and six excellent receptions in the losing cause.
Royse Tubino chipped in 15 markers along with 12 excellent digs, while Manabat supplemented 11 points.
Choco Mucho will take on sister team Creamline on Tuesday, December 3, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
