Cignal avoids game extension, sends D’Navigators to 5th straight loss

Cignal ended what could have been a potentially lengthy game into a 25-16, 25-23, 26-24 victory over D’Navigators Iloilo in the Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference preliminaries at the Ynares Sports Arena on Sunday, November 10.

After falling behind 22-24 in the third set, the HD Spikers showed grace under pressure as they delivered four consecutive points to secure a straight-set win, improving their record to 4-1.

Cignal coach Dexter Clamor decided to use his second six as the D’Navigators pushed Cignal into tight battles, going ahead 22-19 in the third frame. An off-the-block hit courtesy of Steven St. Maria steered the team to a set point, 24-22, paving the way for a possible fourth set.

However, the HD Spikers’ second unit took advantage of the D’Navigators’ mistakes and indecisiveness during the crucial moment.

Jau Umandal and Martin Bugaoan came through to end the game, sealing the HD Spikers’ victory in the tournament.

"Actually nung third set kasi ginamit namin 'yung second six. So dapat laging ready, kasi 'yung team na 'to equally talented players eh. Dapat lang 'yung second stringers isipin nila kapag gagamitin sila is to contribute," Coach Clamor said.

“That's how much I trust them that they will deliver. Anyone can be used on the court, first six or second six, because as I said they are of the same level. It's just that when they are chosen to play on the court, they cannot be out of focus," he added.

Sta. Maria and Kyle Romones’s mistakes resulted in a 24-all deuce before Umandal hammered an off-the-block hit, propelling Cignal HD at match point. Bugaoan then rejected Sta. Maria at the net to end the contest.

Team captain JP Bugaoan and Umandal both tallied nine points in the winning cause, while Louie Ramirez chipped in eight points in Cignal’s balanced offensive attack.

The HD Spikers will put the undefeated La Salle-EcoOil Green Oilers to the test when they face on Friday, November 15.

Meanwhile, Vince Himzon scored nine points in the losing effort. Kyle Villamor and Sta. Maria added eight markers apiece as the D’Navigators battle VNS Griffins on Sunday, November 17, in an attempt to snap its losing streak.
