Tsunashima, Delos Santos out of Ateneo’s UAAP S87 campaign

The Ateneo Blue Eagles will have to continue their UAAP Season 87 campaign without two key players after injuries to Zel Tsunashima and Jlo Delos Santos were evaluated last week.

Tsunashima sustained a freak injury during their opening match against the Adamson Lady Falcons when she landed awkwardly after a block attempt, resulting in a broken left shin (tibia and fibula) in the fifth set.

At the time, Tsunashima had scored 10 points and was a crucial part of Ateneo’s effort. She had to leave the game late in the deciding set when Adamson was ahead, 11-9.

Meanwhile, Delos Santos, who was injured during a tune-up game on Valentine’s Day, has been diagnosed with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), ruling her out for the rest of Ateneo’s Season 87 campaign.

These injuries come as another setback for the Blue Eagles, who are also dealing with Sobe Buena and Zey Pacia’s minor aches.

Now in their second season under coach Sergio Veloso, the Blue Eagles will rely on Lyann De Guzman and AC Miner to lead the team forward.

The Ateneo Blue Eagles lost against the National University Lady Bulldogs, 23-25, 19-25, 15-25, at the FilOil EcoOil San Juan Centre on Wednesday, February 19.
