The two-time Winter Olympian surprised Filipino sports fans with a birthday announcement confirming his plans to compete at the 2026 Philippine National Figure Skating Championships!

And he delivered the news with his trademark humor! 

He added:

“Anyway… I'm competing again. Good luck knees."

Martinez admitted that he never imagined making another competitive comeback after spending years away from the ice.

But after repeatedly being asked whether he would ever compete again, the Filipino Olympian eventually found himself asking one simple question:

The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF), under president Frank Lao, is rolling out major organizational reforms aimed at addressing long-standing problems involving player availability, scheduling conflicts, and coordination between volleyball leagues and national teams.

And this time, the country's biggest volleyball stakeholders are getting seats at the decision-making table!

WHAT'S CHANGING?

UAAP, NCAA, PVL, AND SHAKEY'S V-LEAGUE — Representatives will participate in the National Team Commission, which Lao will personally chair.

BETTER SCHEDULING COORDINATION — The PNVF has formally reached out to the PVL to align its domestic calendar with upcoming FIVB competitions.

ALAS PILIPINAS RESTRUCTURING — Changes are expected for the men's and women's indoor national teams.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL CONTINUITY — The national beach volleyball squads are expected to remain intact.

GOVERNANCE REFORMS — The federation has submitted governance requirements to the FIVB, including conflict-of-interest safeguards and plans for an Athletes Commission.

BUT HERE'S THE REAL QUESTION: WILL THESE REFORMS FINALLY END THE RECURRING PROBLEMS OF PHILIPPINE VOLLEYBALL?

For years, Filipino volleyball fans have watched national teams deal with incomplete rosters, conflicting schedules, and limited preparation time.

OUR TAKE: PHILIPPINE VOLLEYBALL DOESN'T NEED ANOTHER ROUND OF PROMISES. IT NEEDS A SYSTEM THAT ACTUALLY WORKS!

Giving major leagues a voice is a promising step.

But representation alone will not guarantee cooperation.

REAL REFORM MEANS PLAYERS ARE AVAILABLE, TRAINING CAMPS ARE PROPERLY SCHEDULED, AND NATIONAL TEAMS ARE GIVEN ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE! 

The UAAP, NCAA, PVL, and other stakeholders have important roles in developing Filipino volleyball talent.

Their cooperation could help establish a more sustainable national team program.

But the success of this restructuring must ultimately be judged by what happens on the court.

The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) has taken another step in the Senate budget process after Chairman Atty. Francisco J. Rivera appeared before the Senate Committee on Finance, Subcommittee D, on October 14, 2026.

Presided over by Senator Bong Go, the hearing examined the agency's proposed 2027 budget and its responsibilities in regulating professional sports, overseeing professional games, and addressing illegal gambling.

The proposed budget was deemed submitted at the committee level, marking another procedural step in the budget deliberations.

GAB plays an important role in maintaining standards across professional sports, including boxing and other regulated competitions.

A STRONG SPORTS INDUSTRY CANNOT EXIST WITHOUT EFFECTIVE REGULATION!

Professional athletes deserve proper safeguards, fair treatment, and clear procedures for addressing concerns.

Meanwhile, illegal gambling and unlawful betting activities pose serious risks to public trust and the integrity of sporting competitions.

As Congress continues reviewing the proposed national budget, attention should remain on how GAB can strengthen its services, enforce regulations, and protect the people who make professional sports possible.

HOW CAN WE DEMAND WORLD-CLASS PERFORMANCES WHEN OUR NATIONAL ATHLETES ARE STILL WAITING FOR BASIC FINANCIAL SUPPORT?

Serious questions have been raised during a Senate budget hearing over delayed training allowances for members of the Philippine women's national volleyball team.

Senator Bong Go questioned reports that some athletes have not received their allowances for TWO MONTHS, emphasizing the importance of providing timely support to those representing the country.

But the issue goes beyond delayed payments.

₱270 MILLION IN UNLIQUIDATED PNVF FUNDS!

According to Commission on Audit Supervising Auditor Jeorge Roman Lozano, the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) has an outstanding ₱270 million in funds awaiting liquidation.

PSC Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio also pointed to administrative complications following three leadership changes within the federation since 2025.

Meanwhile, Alas Pilipinas men's team captain Bryan Bagunas previously revealed that some players had to borrow money just to attend training sessions.

LET THAT SINK IN.

Athletes preparing to represent the Philippine flag reportedly had to borrow money simply to train!

BUT HERE'S THE BIGGER QUESTION: WHY SHOULD ATHLETES CARRY THE BURDEN OF ADMINISTRATIVE PROBLEMS THEY DID NOT CREATE?

Delayed allowances and unresolved financial documentation are separate issues that both require attention.

The reported ₱270 million in unliquidated funds does not automatically establish misuse of public money, but it demands proper accounting, transparency, and timely resolution.

ATHLETE WELFARE MUST NEVER BECOME COLLATERAL DAMAGE IN ORGANIZATIONAL DISPUTES OR BUREAUCRATIC DELAYS!

National athletes already sacrifice time, energy, and personal resources to compete for the country.

They should be focused on training, recovery, and competition — not repeatedly following up on financial assistance.

Gregorio expressed hope that newly installed PNVF President Frank Lao could help resolve the situation.

But moving forward, the priority must be clear:

TIMELY ALLOWANCES. TRANSPARENT ACCOUNTING. CLEAR RESPONSIBILITIES. STRONGER ATHLETE PROTECTION.

THE PHILIPPINE FLAG SHOULD REPRESENT PRIDE AND OPPORTUNITY — NOT FINANCIAL UNCERTAINTY FOR THOSE WHO WEAR IT!

If we want better international results, we must also provide reliable support behind the scenes.

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is pushing forward with the construction of new sports facilities at its National Training Center inside Teachers' Camp in Baguio City!

BUT HERE'S THE BIGGER QUESTION: WHY SHOULD QUALITY TRAINING FACILITIES BE A LUXURY FOR FILIPINO ATHLETES?

For years, the Philippines has celebrated international medals while many promising athletes continue training with limited equipment, inadequate facilities, and insufficient resources.

WE CANNOT KEEP DEMANDING WORLD-CLASS RESULTS WITHOUT PROVIDING WORLD-CLASS PREPARATION! 💯

This development in Baguio is a welcome investment in the future of Philippine sports.

But building facilities is only the beginning.

OUR TAKE: THE REAL SUCCESS OF THESE PROJECTS WILL BE MEASURED BY HOW MANY ATHLETES CAN ACTUALLY USE THEM — NOT JUST HOW IMPRESSIVE THEY LOOK AT THE RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY!

These facilities must be properly maintained, accessible to developing athletes, and supported by qualified coaches and sustainable training programs.

And most importantly, similar opportunities must reach athletes outside major cities.

CHAMPIONS ARE NOT CREATED ON THE PODIUM. THEY ARE DEVELOPED THROUGH YEARS OF TRAINING, DISCIPLINE, AND OPPORTUNITY!

Baguio's sports upgrade is a promising step toward building a stronger national sports system.

BUILD THE FACILITIES. DEVELOP THE TALENT. SUPPORT THE ATHLETES. PRODUCE THE CHAMPIONS.
