St. Luke’s waives Cantantan’s hospital bills
Filipina Olympic fencer Samatha Kyle Catantan needs no worries as St. Luke’s Global City waived her hospital bill and even the doctor’s fee after the successful operation of her knee due to ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury.
According to Dr. Jose Raul Canlas, the gesture of the hospital was to honor the Olympian’s contribution to Philippine sports.
“I did the major surgery on Sam’s knees and when the administration of St. Luke’s found out that she’s an Olympian, all her hospital bills were waived,” said Dr. Canlas
Meanwhile, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino thanked the management of St. Luke’s for the help that they have given not only to Catantan but also to the honorable contribution to the industry.
On the other hand, Sam who became the first Filipina fencer to qualify for the Olympics sent her gratitude to St. Luke’s for waiving her hospital expenses, Dr. Canlas who did the surgery and POC who supported her all the way.
“Thank you to St. Luke’s, Dr. Canlas, and the POC, (Tagaytay City) Mayor Tolentino for helping me,” said by the 22-year-old fencer.
Catantan’s longtime coach, Amatov Canlas frequently visited Sam in the hospital to give support and encouragement just like he always does in their journey together that even led to their Paris Olympic success.
Sam made history in the Olympics by hurdling the round-of-64 of the foil event to advance to the next round. Then, she battled toe-to-toe against No. 2 ranked Arianna Errigo of Italy and only lost by three points, 12-15 despite having a bad knee.
