The PLDT High Speed Hitters kicked off their 2025 AVC Women’s Champions League campaign after overcoming a shaky start against the Australia’s Queensland Pirates, 25-19, 25-12, 25-12, on Sunday, April 20, at the PhilSports Arena.

Savi Davison powered the High Speed Hitters with 14 attack points while also registering eight excellent digs and three excellent receptions, earning the Player of the Match honors.

The Pirates dictated the early tempo, going on a 6-1 run in the opening frame. But the tide turned when Wilma Salas’s service ace shifted the momentum and handed PLDT their first lead of the match.

Despite the Pirates’ efforts to regain control, the High Speed Hitters responded with urgency. Fiola Ceballos stepped up in the clutch, giving PLDT a 20-16 cushion.

Although an out-of-bounds attack momentarily disrupted PLDT’s flow, Kim Kianna Dy’s relentless offense pushed the lead to 23-17. Dy eventually sealed the set with a powerful attack, completing the comeback.

The second set saw PLDT firing on all cylinders, launching an 8-0 run to open the frame. The Pirates struggled with unforced errors while PLDT showcased their fluidity and speed. Majoy Baron brought the heat when it mattered, and Davison hammered key attacks from the front row, keeping the Pirates on their heels.

Kim Fajardo orchestrated the offense with finesse, including a highlight one-handed set to Mika Reyes that set up match point. PLDT sealed the second set with authority, leaving the Pirates scrambling for answers as the High Speed Hitters found their rhythm and never looked back.

The third set was no different as PLDT maintained their grip on the game. The High Speed Hitters opened with another dominant 8-0 run and held firm throughout, keeping the Pirates at bay.

With solid defense and sharp execution, the High Speed Hitters cruised to the finish, completing a straight sets triumph and sending a strong message with their all-around performance.

Cuban import Wilma Salas backstopped Davison’s efforts with 11 markers, while Reyes added 10 markers of her own.

Up next, the High Speed Hitters will take on Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima QminC on Tuesday, April 22.
