Celtics ties 3-point record in NBA’s Season 79 opening night
Defending champions Boston Celtics tied the most number of three-pointers made by a team in their victory over the New York Knicks, 132-109, in the opening night of the NBA’s 2024-2025 Season.
Before the game started, the Celtics received their championship rings and the 18th banner of the franchise was raised in the rafters.
Jayson Tatum grabbed the microphone before the ceremony to pump-up the crowd inside the TD Garden in Boston.
“Enjoy this moment together. Let’s do it again,” he uttered.
Tatum also started the game with a triple and finished 8/11 from behind the arc. He also led his team with game-high 37 points, together with 10 assists, four rebounds, one steal, and a block. JT also had a game-high of +26.
The whole Boston squad had a combined 29/61 (47.5%) from the three-point territory. Their 29 tied what the record set by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2020, while the Knicks also put up decent numbers from downtown with 11/30 shooting but not enough to topple Celtics record.
Boston had the largest lead in the middle of the fourth period with 35 to make the game almost unreachable already, and they held onto their huge lead until the final buzzer.
The Celtics also led in the rebounding department, and they had an impressive total of 33 assists against only three turnovers.
Jalen Brown and Jrue Holiday scored 23 points each for Boston to backed-up the all-around game of JT, while Derrick White and Luke Cornet added 21 and 14, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Knicks were led by Jalen Brunson and Miles McBride with 22 markers each but have a combined -41 also.
New York’s newly-acquired big man Karl Anthony-Towns contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists in his new squad.
The next two games of the Celtics will still be on the road. They will face the Wizards on October 25 (PHT) in Washington and against the Pistons on Sunday, October 27, in Detroit.
The Knicks will try to bounce back at home at the Madison Square Garden in New York when they battle the Indiana Pacers also on Sunday, October 27.
