The Philippine Dragon Boat Team bagged the overall championship in the recently concluded 2024 ICF Dragon Boat World Championships held in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan from October 27 to Sunday, November 3.In front of a lively hometown crowd, the Filipino paddlers added two gold, five silver and two bronze medals for an impressive 11-20-16 overall tally.The Southeast Asian powerhouse Thailand took runner-up honors with eight golds, while the I.N.A (Individual Neutral Athlete) squad was third with a haul of six golds, three silvers and three bronzes in the meet supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and Tingog party-list.The hosts won a hotly-contested masters mixed 20-seater standard boat 500-meter race in two minutes and 6.34 seconds, nosing out Singapore (2:06.73) while Germany was not too far behind in third (2:07.98) in the competition organized by the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragon Boat Federation.The Filipinos were also runaway winners in the 40+ 20-seater women’s 2,000-meter standard boat event (10:42.31) over runner-up Canada (10:48.64) and took silvers in the 20-seater mixed standard boat 500-meter  (1:58.13), 40+ 10-seater mixed 500-meter (2:19.45), 20-seater open (9:23.16) and 40+ 20-seater open 5,000-meter (9:34.47) races. But the 20-seater mixed standard 500-meters was the most thrilling as the hosts virtually led from start to finish until they were beaten in the last 10 meters by the late-charging Ukrainians, who snatched the gold in 1:57.51.   They also bagged the last bronze of the day in the 40+ 10-seater open 500-meter (2:15.93) event in the four-day tournament also supported by the Puerto Princesa City governmentAccording to Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragon Boat Federation or PCKDF president Leonora "Lenlen" Escollante, they are happy with the country's achievement and they were not disappointed in their hope that it will lead the international competition.Escollante also appreciates the warm support of the local government of Puerto Princesa in holding this type of international sporting events, as well as the hospitality of Filipinos to foreign visitors participating in the competition.

Meralco Bolts import Allen Durham has decided to retire from playing basketball to spend more time with his family.This was confirmed by Bolts head coach Luigi Trillo, during the send off party given by his team. “AD has decided to retire and he just feels it’s the right time. He wants to spend time with his children,” said Trillo.The Meralco Bolts head coach believes that the participation of Durham in the team was  considered a big part in turning the Meralco Bolts into what it is today. The Bolts coach also believes that their losses in this conference laid the foundations for their team to become stable and strong in their next journey.

The Philippine National Shooting Association (PNSA) will host the Southeast Asian Shooting Association Championships from November 24 to December 14, 2024.This is the 46th edition of the event in which it will feature competitions in practical shooting, sporting clays, bench rest, and Olympic shotgun which includes both trap and skeet shooting. About eight to nine neighboring countries are expected to participate in the three-week meet comprising around 300-350 shooters.According  to  PNSA secretary-general Iryne Garcia even though this is not their  first time in the Philippines to hold such a big event, all of them including the organizers are filled with joy and happiness in the upcoming event. 

Four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry of Golden State Warriors will miss the next two games because of a left ankle injury that he sustained on Sunday night, October 27.Curry was injured in the 7:55 remaining of the fourth quarter of Golden State's 112-104 home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers last Sunday. He underwent an MRI late last night.   He finished with 18 points, six assists and four rebounds, while shooting 6 for 11 from the field with four 3-pointers before being subbed-out.Warriors will be severely handicapped when they host the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday. However, Curry is scheduled to be reevaluated on Friday. Good news for them, the MRI showed no structural damage. The Warriors also confirmed that he (Curry) suffered a peroneal strain in the area where tendons connect the fibula and ankle.

Igorot Muay Thai fighter Islay Erika Bomogao, will make her debut in ONE Championship on November 8, a platform where many Igorot MMA athletes have built their reputations. Bomogao recently shared this exciting news on her social media, posting a photo of herself in ONE Championship gloves, indicating her readiness to accept the upcoming challenge in this combat sport. Now that she’s close to reaching the pinnacle of Muay Thai, Bomogao can’t hide her excitement.

The Philippines will spearhead a world class dragonboat competition in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan scheduled on October 28 to November 4. This tournament will also serve as a qualification for the 2025 World Games.According to Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragon Boat Federation or PCKDF head Leonora “Len” Escollante, the federation already coordinated to the provincial government as well as to the local government unit of Puerto Princesa, Palawan for the necessary preparations of the venue for the said event and for the benefit of the participants. They are also very grateful to the Philippine Sports Commission and to all the local officials in the province because of their unwavering support in their endeavor and also to their program and projects when it comes to this kind of sport in the Philippines. She also thanked Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucindo Bayron for their full support, said among the countries fielding big delegations are India with 150, Thailand and Iran with 80 each and the host country with 200.

Angeline Viriña a native from the town of Sta. Cuz, Laguna won the gold medal in her first participation in the international championship. In Viriña's debut fight, she immediately showed her skill and talent in this type of martial arts in the women's -45kg class. It defeated opponents, one from the host country Uzbekistan and the other from Indonesia.Apart from the gold medal, the Philippine pencak silat team also won five silver medals and nine bronze medals in the 8th Asian Pencak Silat Championship 2024 in Bukhara, Uzbekistan.According to PhilSilat Sports Association President Princess Jacel Kiram, a total of 22 athletes were sent to compete in the said championship and 19 of these athletes won medals. Kiram expressed pride in the team’s achievement, highlighting their dedication and perseverance.“Out of 22 athletes, 19 secured medals— a remarkable testament to your hard work. Your efforts have made us all proud,” Kiram shared in a social media post.Kiram also thanked the Philippine Sports Commission for its continued support, adding, “Mabuhay ang Team Pilipinas! Here’s to more success in the future!”  Last week, the Philippines also won a medal for the first time in the recently concluded 2024 Asian Kickboxing Championship in Cambodia where Philippines won 5 gold, 1 silver, and 10 bronze medals. Paris Olympian boxer Hergie Bacyadan was one of the athletes who brought home a gold medal.

Because of their unparalleled experience and skill in Sambo sports, six-time world medalist Sydney Sy-Tancontian and 2024 Asian Championships double silver medalist Aislinn Yap among other Sambo athletes won gold medals in the recently concluded 2024 Korea Open Sambo Championships that was organized by the Korean Sambo Federation and the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) last week.Sy-Tancontian defended her crown under the women's +80kgs category to follow up with the first medal of the Philippines and the Southeast Asian region, while Yap won two gold medals for two different categories - Women's -80kgs (Combat Sambo ) and Women's -80kgs (Sports Sambo).The participation of the Pilipinas Sambo national team is also part of the preparation  for the World Championships which will be held on November 8-10 that will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan.Aside from Sy-Tancontian and Yap, Jeniva Consigna, also got a gold medal in women's under-65kgs, Jomary Torres won a gold medal for Women's -50kgs, Mariah Albert Lua also got a gold medal for women's under-72kgs category, Robin Catalan won a silver medal under Men's -64kgs category, Grace Gangan became a silver medalist under Women's -80kgs category, Aumaegel Princess Cortez got a bronze medal for Women's -59kgs category, and Edemel Catalan won a bronze medal for the Men's -58kgs category. According to Pilipinas SAMBO Federation Inc. (PSFI) President Paolo Tancontian, they really prepared for this competition to win a medal and there has been a big improvement in the performance of their athletes now compared to last year.“I consider this a good performance from our athletes compared to last year because we improved a lot in terms of medals we obtained. Our national team prepared well for this tournament. They improve greatly on this tourney and we hope to see them perform well in the next competitions,” said Tancontian.Tancontian added that it is not enough for them to determine the  improvement they have now and they also keep up learning and studying the processes of this kind of sport because Asia is on a different level when it comes to this type of sport.“However, we still have a lot of room for improvement. Filipino cue artist Johann Chua was crowned king of the Hanoi Open Pool Championship 2024 after defeating Chinese Taipei's Ko Pin Yi, 13-7, in the race-to-13 finals last Sunday. It was Chua's first 9-ball world title at the Hanoi Indoor Game Gymnasium in Vietnam.Before entering the finals, Chua first defeated his compatriot Carlo Biado, 11-5 in the semifinals. At the beginning of the match between Chua and Ko, the two players were still going toe-to-toe because their easy shots in the 3-ball and 7-ball were still missing.Yi was the first to win the first rack but Chua didn't give in despite of nervy start, who didn't get a chance so he immediately took four wins in a row until he claimed the crown.His Chinese Taipei bet committed a foul on the 2-ball on rack 16 which gave the opening for Chua to once again regain the table to restore his lead.This is where Chua gained momentum and was careful with his turns and also took advantage of the opportunity to get the 19th rack, until the 20th rack, and his turns became more smooth and here he claimed the expected title after falling short in the World Pool Championship semifinals and in the Europe Open finals.Chua, a 32-year-old cue master, emotionally receives the prize of his labor amounting to $30,000 cash prize and he wants to show the Vietnamese and Filipino fans the skill and the talent of Pinoys in the field of billiards. “Sa Vietnam last night, ang dami ng tao but iba pa rin yung mag-perform ka sa sarili mong bansa and my family and friends talaga. Sixteen young Filipino jiu-jitsu fighters bag gold medals in the recent Sports Jiu-jitsu International Federation World Championship in Nagoya, Japan.Brielle Bartolome, playing as a kindergarten featherweight in the no-gi category, won both in the gi and no gi divisions. Bartolome overcame Peng Nian of China via armbar to win the gold in the first round. She also outpointed Nishimoto Wakana of Japan to win the kindergarten gi rooster-weight division gold medal.Aside from Bartolome, Marcus Dela Cruz under light featherweight in the no-gi category, submitted all his opponents en route to the gold. The Elasto Painters team is now ready for their competition against Magnolia Hotshots in another do-or-die game tomorrow, Saturday, October 5, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City. Coach Yeng Guiao firmly believes that through this match, their desire to end the eight-year hunger for a title will be strong and soon to get hold of it. It can be remembered that last Tuesday in their intense Game 4 against the Hotshots, Rain or Shine failed to get the third win and they were dumped by Magnolia, 129-100. Guiao said that his team's stability as well as their resiliency and character will be tested in their clash tomorrow (Saturday) against the Hotshots. “Yung experience of playing a Game 5, of being in a winner-take-all situation, sa akin, kasama na ng build up yun. We're always getting better every playoff game that we played,” said the head coach of Rain or Shine. “So investment namin ito sa future ng team na para lalo kang tumitibay pag ka ganitong sitwasyon. So a Game 5 would be good for us as a team. This Saturday pag balik namin kailangan mas prepared kami for a very physical game, noting how the Hotshots played physically in the previous game.” Guiao added. “On our end, siguro kailangan kaming mag step up in terms of being a little bit more aggressive defensively and medyo yung transition game namin, yung running game namin, I don’t know if we’re tired or we’re a little slower or not able to get into the pace that we would usually be playing,” told Guiao. The winner of the series will play TNT Tropang Giga in the best-of-seven semis that begins on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.

Aaron Fuller, a native from Mesa, Arizona, started playing basketball during his college years in the University of Iowa and University of California before he became a professional player, and played in Portugal, New Zealand and Mexico, and later in the Philippines.In 2017, Fuller decided to play basketball in the Philippines where he signed with the NLEX Road Warriors as an import for the 2017 PBA Governors’ Cup where he averaged 22.6 points  17.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.5 blocks in 11 games.After a year, Fuller re-joined the NLEX Road Warriors in August for the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup as replacement for Olu Ashaolu who suffered an injury. Fuller also played for Blackwater Elite in 2019 and in TNT Tropang GIga in 2021-2022.In July 2024, Fuller returned to the Philippines for the fifth time, this time playing as an import for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the 2024 PBA Governors' Cup. This is Fuller's fourth team in the PBA. He also reunited with coach Yeng Guiao who coached him during his stay with the NLEX from 2017-2018. In an exclusive interview of Scoreline.ph, Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao expressed that Aaron Fuller was the type of their import that is a simple and quiet person, not showy or flashy.Guiao has confidence in Fuller in terms of being proactive and reactive. He also believed that his import can always contribute in offense, as Fuller was able to produce around 20 points, 15-20 in rebounding and can play defense too, plus he has a strong body.

Martin is now back on training at the Knuckleheads Boxing Gym in Las Vegas. While in the roster of WBO, Martin now has almost a guarantee for a title shot that he may continue to emerge victorious.  Sean Gibbons, Martin’s promoter guaranteed  that he will fight again this December in a world title shot in 2025. “He will fight again in December then a world title shot in 2025,” said Gibbons. Meanwhile, Naoya “The Monster” Inoue will fight again in December and in April 2025 before he will attempt to invade the featherweight ranks in pursuit of a fifth world title in as many weight classes.

Newly-elected Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) president Ramon “Tats” Suzara pledged to work hard to further develop and improve the men's and women’s national team.This, as he also will now head of the organizing committee for the country’s hosting of the FIVB Men’s World Championship in September next year,  as well as continuing with his duties as  chief of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation. “We need to improve, improve, improve. I want them to go up higher in the rankings like what Gilas Pilipinas is doing,” adding that improvement should not only come from players but the coaches as well. said Suzara. As he came on board as PNVF president, the Philippine teams were ranked No.117 in the world. After nearly three years under his watch, the men’s team is now at No. 56 and the women’s team at No. 63.Suzara says he intends to look for more international exposure for the team and wants to strengthen the grassroots while looking for up-and-coming volleyball talent.“We will go back to the grassroots in Luzon Visayas and Mindanao. There’s still a lot of tall players in the provinces. I’m sure madami pa, Our national teams need 30 international matches a year.  And we will do this. Kung maaari lang na one year wala sila dito we will do that though it’s expensive,” Suzara added.

Filipino boxer Carl Jammes “The Wonder Boy” Martin won via TKO in his debut fight in foreign soil against a Mexican boxer Anthony Salas last Saturday, September 7. He overpowered Mexican boxer Anthony Salas in less than two rounds in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico. This marked also a significant milestone in his promising boxing career.Martin said that his rigorous training in the US contributed a lot to sharpen his skills and the fruit of his labor reaps. Aside from focusing on his training, he confidently believes that by the help and trust in God Almighty he will definitely win this fight. “I feel this is the right time to fight and prove myself abroad. This is the time to show that I am ready after being trained at the Knuckleheads Boxing Ranch training compound in Las Vegas, Nevada, This is what I needed as I look forward to fighting for a world title in 2025.” Martin said. Beginning in the first round, Martin targeted the body of Salas with all of his power punches until in the second round where he knocked down Salas with double punches in the head and in body until another combination attack and  left hook to the body sustained by Salas.. The referee decided then to step in and stop the fight. Currently, Martin is no. 3 in the WBO ranking with an unblemished record of 24 wins, with 18 knockouts. Martin now is one of the possible challengers for Japanese Champion Naoya “The Monster” Inoue who is the undisputed super bantamweight world champion. He is also ranked in NO. 6 in the International Boxing Federation (IBF). 

After handily defending his title against India's Saurabh Kumar at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia lastSunday, WBC Asia super-bantam title Marlon Tapales aims to fight again and meet WBC/WBA/IBF/ WBO super bantamweight Japanese champion Naoya “The Monster” Inoue. Sanman CEO JC Manangquil said they will ensure that Tapales will remain active in boxing and hopefully  he may be able to fight someone again before the end of this year. Manangquil added that if one of the titles held by Inoue becomes vacant, he can go and fight for it. "Maybe if one of those titles becomes vacant from (Naoya) Inoue, we can fight for a world title. But we will keep Marlon active. Maybe another fight before the end of the year," said Manangquil.Right now, Tapales is busy rehearsing and preparing for a possible world title shot next year. May of this year, Tapales fought Nattapong Jankaew of Thailand where he won via KO in Pasay City, while in 2023, Tapales was defeated via KO by Japanese champion Naoya "The Monster" Inoue in the 10th round of their match in Tokyo, Japan.
