PBA Philippine Cup Finals set for a showdown of powerhouse teams

After dismantling their opponents in the PBA Philippine Cup Season 49 Final Four, the powerhouse and flagship teams of their respective franchises are set to collide in the final championship showdown of the season.

The winningest team in PBA history, the San Miguel Beermen, will face the grand slam-seeking TNT Tropang 5G in a best-of-seven series starting Sunday, July 13, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

PBA Finals Preview - San Miguel Beermen vs TNT Tropang 5G

In the semifinals, San Miguel outlasted their sister team, Barangay Ginebra, in seven hard-fought games, while TNT closed out their series against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in six.

The Beermen took a longer route as Ginebra’s veteran LA Tenorio showed he’s still clutch, carrying the Gin Kings to force a Game 7. But SMB responded with vintage playoff poise, led by the ever-reliable Chris Ross, who delivered a Finals-clinching performance on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, TNT once again asserted dominance over Rain or Shine — a team they’ve now eliminated in three straight semifinal matchups.

Now that the bannered teams of the San Miguel Corporation and MVP Group are set to collide, let’s break down some of the key factors that could lead either team to the Promised Land.

Battle of the Coaches: Leo Austria vs. Chot Reyes

Austria has guided the Beermen to 9 of their 29 PBA titles, including six from the Philippine Cup (All-Filipino Conference). He has only lost once in the Finals and now seeks his 10th championship — and more importantly, San Miguel’s 30th title.

Reyes, on the other hand, owns 11 titles, including six Philippine Cup crowns. He is also a six-time “Coach of the Year,” the most in PBA history. As a national coach, he led Gilas Pilipinas to a silver medal in the FIBA Asia Cup and ended the country’s 36-year FIBA World Cup drought.

Though their paths to success differ, both coaches have winning pedigrees. Reyes has a slight edge in accolades, but Austria’s consistency in the Philippine Cup makes this an even duel. Reyes won his first title as a rookie coach with Purefoods, while Austria was the league’s inaugural Rookie of the Year.

Star Power and Supporting Casts

San Miguel still banks on their anchor — eight-time MVP June Mar Fajardo, who is a strong contender for a ninth MVP this season. Alongside him are CJ Perez, who can turn the tide at any moment, the playmaking Chris Ross, sharpshooter Marcio Lassiter, and steady Juami Tiongson.

Backing them are tough, reliable role players: Rodney Brondial, Mo Tautuaa, Jericho Cruz, Don Trollano, Kris Rosales, and Jeron Teng.

Andreas Cahilig remains doubtful due to injury, but they can turn to JM Calma off the bench when needed.

On the TNT side, they remain without two previous Finals MVPs — Jayson Castro (Governors’ Cup MVP) and Rey Nambatac (Commissioner’s Cup Finals MVP) — both sidelined with injuries.

Still, Calvin Oftana has stepped up in a big way, although he too was banged up during their semis run. He was flanked by RR Pogoy and veteran Kelly Williams, who also suffered injuries in the Final Four.

Big men Poy Erram and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser continue to be reliable. Erram is fully locked in on basketball, and if he maintains that focus, he’ll be a crucial piece in their title hopes. Ganuelas-Rosser brought physicality in the previous series but made key contributions down the stretch.

There’s also Jordan Heading, battling back spasms but still leading the charge to the Finals. If he reaches full health, he could be a difference-maker.

TNT can also turn to their deep bench: Simon Enciso, Glenn Khobuntin, Brian Heruela, Almond Vosotros, Kim Aurin, Henry Galinato, and Paul Varilla.

On paper, San Miguel appears to have the more complete and healthier roster, giving them a slight edge. But don’t count out the hunger of the Tropang 5G, who are aiming for their first-ever grand slam.

Will San Miguel end TNT’s dream run? Or will the Tropang 5G dominate an era once ruled by the Beermen?

We’ll find out in this best-of-seven Finals that could very well go the distance.
