Philippine fencers secure golds in 2025 PFA Senior Ranking event

National fencers continued to assert their dominance by sweeping the gold medals in their respective events at the 2025 Philippine Fencing Association (PFA) 2nd Leg Senior Ranking held at Alabang Town Center in Muntinlupa City.

A total of 219 fencers competed in the tournament, which serves as a qualifier for the Philippine team set to compete in the 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand this December.

In the Women’s Saber category, former SEA Games champion Jylyn Nicanor delivered a commanding performance, shutting out University of the Philippines’s Maria Angela Dayro 15-0 to claim the gold medal. Her national teammate Queen Dalmacio secured the bronze.

The Women’s Foil event saw the Catantan sisters take center stage with a 1-2 finish. Sophia edged out her older sister Jannah in a nail-biting 15-14 final to claim gold. Veteran Wilhelmina Lozada and De La Salle Santiago Zobel (DLSZ) fencer Miyake Capina settled for bronze.

Defending champion Alexa Larrazabal remained dominant in the Women’s Épée, defeating La Salle’s Krups Kaya Ednilag 15-8 in the final. Julianna Gomez and Ashley Harrison completed the podium with bronze finishes.

WINNERS OF THE 2025 PFA MEN'S DIVISION

In the men’s division, CJ Concepcion successfully defended his Men’s Saber title with a convincing 15-7 victory over Khian Nash Ferrer. Meanwhile, University of the East’s Charles Eduard Babatio and Jean Matthew Ignacio earned bronze medals.

SEA Games silver medalist Noelito Jose Jr. bounced back from his first-leg loss to claim gold in the Men’s Épée. He avenged his earlier defeat with a 15-7 win over fellow national team member Lee Eigran Ergina.

The Men’s Foil event featured a strong performance from Samuel Tranquilan, who claimed gold after defeating UE’s Robert Cabaero 15-10 in the final. Tranquilan also eliminated first-leg champion Nathaniel Perez 15-9 in their table-of-eight matchup.

With their stellar performances, the national fencers proved their dominance and bolstered their chances of representing the country in the upcoming SEA Games.
