PBBM briefly tackles sports in 2024 SONA

In what appeared to be one of the most consequential State of the Nation Addresses or SONAs in recent memory, Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., spared one minute of his SONA time to discuss vague plans about his administration’s thrust into sports.

For, in a speech loaded with the banning of offshore gaming operations, an affirmation of Philippine territory, and the traditional promises and accomplishments - Bongbong’s third SONA allocated all but a minute for the Philippine sporting world.

“Grassroots and sports-for-all programs are back in the mainstream again, catering to Filipinos of all ages. Nailunsad na namang muli ang taunang Palarong Pambansa, matapos ang tatlong taong pagkakatigil nito dahil sa pandemiya,” Marcos said in his speech.

He also went on to praise the recently concluded Palarong Pambansa games in 2023 and 2024, thanking both Marikina and Cebu for hosting the games.

The President went on to say that health-enhancing sports programs will be made more accessible, saying, “We will continue to support these health-enhancing sports programs. Through these, we also set forth our youth on the same well-established path that has taken some of our national champions and renowned athletes to sporting greatness.”

The Palarong Pambansa is organized by the Department of Education, a post formerly held by Marcos’ running mate in 2022, PH Vice President Sara Duterte.

Finally, the chief executive also took a moment to acknowledge the country’s delegation to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“To the twenty-two of our finest athletes, who shall be competing in Paris for the glory of the Philippines: We wish you well and good luck,” President Marcos said in his speech.

For his part, Philippine Sports Commission chairperson Richard “Dickie” Bachmann thanked the President for mentioning and cheering on the country’s Olympic athletes.

"I am just proud that the President mentioned sports in his speech,” Bachmann said in a statement. “Our efforts have been fruitful. Moving forward, we still have a lot to do and we need the support of BBM, POC, NSA’s and PSC to find the next athlete that will represent the country.

"Let’s pray and support all our athletes competing in the Olympics and Para Olympics," Bachmann added.

This year, the Philippines will be sending 22 athletes to the 2024 Summer Games.
