Hergie Bacyadan reigns Asian Kickboxing Championships

Filipino Olympic boxer Hergie Bacyadan dominated the women’s K1 -70kg category in the Asian Kickboxing Championships in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Saturday, October 12.

Bacyadan’s frustrated attempt to clinch a medal in the women’s boxing tournament of the 2024 Paris Olympics only strengthened her to pursue glory in other combat sports.

The 29-year-old Kalinga fighter delivered one of the Philippines’ four gold medals in the event, overwhelming her opponent Chinese Jinwei Teng via abandonment. Bacyadan’s triumph in the continental kickboxing championships earned her a spot in the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China.

“Everybody wants to be there in the World Games and I’m glad that I’ve qualified,’’ said Bacyadan.

Prior to returning to boxing and qualifying for the Olympics, Bacyadan also thrived in wushu and vovinam. The multi-sport athlete reaped silver in the 2017 World Wushu Championships and gold in the 2023 Vovinam World Championships.

In addition to Bacyadan’s feat, Jovan Medallo and Carlo Von Bumina-ang also brought home gold for the Philippines.

Medallo delivered two golds in the men’s forms division — men’s musical forms with weapon and without weapon — and added bronze in the men’s creative form with weapon, while Bumina-ang ruled the men’s low kick -67kg class.
