Van Sickle explodes 34 points over Choco Mucho in PVL opener
Petro Gazz soared past Choco Mucho, 25-20, 26-28, 25-21, 25-16, capping the first day of the Premier Volleyball League’s All-Filipino Conference on Saturday, November 9, at Philsports Arena in Pasig.
Brooke Van Sickle powered the Angels, erupting 34 points anchored on 28 attacks, four aces, and two kill blocks, while also putting up 14 excellent digs.
“Choco [Mucho] is a fantastic team and you know, just to be able to squeak a win out of them is huge. Good job to them, good job to my teammates and everything. Yeah, I’m very proud of them,” said the Filipino-American outside spiker.
Despite a setback in the second, the reigning conference MVP’s constant scoring and clutch performance helped Petro Gazz defeat the Flying Titans in a decisive fourth period.
Petro Gazz led 12-8 early in the fourth set before Van Sickle’s four-point run to spark a 10-3 blast and gave the Angels a commanding 22-11 lead.
AA Adolfo and Remy Palma added the final touches for the Angels, despite Sisi Rondina's best efforts to rally the Flying Titans.
"Of course, this is one of the games that must be won because this is where you will gain momentum, with the help of the coaching staff and the players enjoying themselves inside the court," said new Petro Gazz assistant coach Brian Esquibel.
With 18 points apiece, Jonah Sabete and Aiza Pontillas supported Van Sickle in the win, with Palma contributing 10 markers.
Petro Gazz will face rival and reigning champion Creamline on Saturday, November 16, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
Choco Mucho, on the other hand, was paced by returning Rondina who tallied 18 points, 13 receptions, and six digs in the losing effort.
Nunag and Kat Tolentino scored 12 points apiece for the Flying Titans.
Choco Mucho looks to bounce back against Galeries Tower on Thursday, November 14, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
