Gilas Pilipinas Youth clinched a berth in the FIBA U18 Asia Cup after Indonesia defeated Malaysia 77-64 last Saturday in the SEABA Qualifiers held at the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.Earlier, the Gilas U18 squad defeated Thailand 87-53 to have a clean slate during the tournament and assured them one of the top two spots when Indonesia won their own battle.The Philippines and Indonesia became the top two teams with 2-0 records after the Saturday games. Having been on top of the standings, they already qualified for SEABA in the FIBA U18 tournament to be held from September 2 to 7 in Amman, Jordan.The two teams will join reigning champion South Korea, host Jordan, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Mongolia, Chinese Taipei, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, India, and Iran.Already assured of the slot, Gilas Youth still swept the tournament by dealing Indonesia their first loss. Aaron Fuller is returning to the PBA as the import of Rain or Shine Elasto Painters for the Season 49 Governor’s Cup. He will be reunited with Yeng Guiao, who coached him during his stay with the NLEX Road Warriors.The PBA confirmed through its website that The Iowa and University of Southern California product will be playing for his fourth team in the PBA. The De La Salle Lady Archers is getting its own share of basketball stars, as Gilas Girls powerhouse Princess “BJ” Villarin will suit up for the green-and-white beginning UAAP Season 87.According to a report from the Tiebreaker Times, the 5-foot-6 Gilas star has chosen to commit to DLSU, ending her high school basketball career with the NU Lady Bullpups and the NU system in general.DLSU management confirmed to Tiebreaker Times that the UAAP 3x3 and NBTC veteran will indeed make the jump from NU to DLSU.During her high school career, Villarin was part of the Lady Bullpups 3x3 program. She also suited up for national team duty, having played in the 2022 FIBA Under-16 and Under-18 Asian Championship.With Villarin’s incluision in the lineup, DLSU can find itself improving on its women’s basketball record after finishing the Final Four with a 7-7 record. An archer from Siliman University competing for the first time ever grabbed three gold medals during the Palarong Pambansa 2024 Archery Competition.Naina Dominique Tagle earlier won two gold medals in the Girls Recurve 60 meters and 70 meters events, and one more for the Girls 1140 FITA event held at the South Road Properties (SRP) Grounds in Cebu City on Saturday, July 13.She ended up getting 3 golds in 4 events she participated in, grabbing the silver medal in the Girls Recurve 50 meters event - a great showing for a team debuting in the highly-competitive regional sports meet.“I think everybody has their skill set and not everyone can be the best at everything,” she told CDN Digital in an interview.Tagle’s coach, Darlene Banglos, had nothing but good words for her debuting team as they ended up victorious in their Palaro debut.“There is a bright future when it comes to archery because these are very young athletes, they still have a lot to learn,” Banglos told CDN Digital.Tagle will be competing for the Olympic Round of the archery event.

Amaro who won four gold medals in the first three days of competition, added three more in the finale day.The San Beda Taytay representative topped the 4x100m medley relay, 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle and finished his campaign by ruling three more events in the 200m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle relay, and the 50m freestyle.

National University showcased its championship poised by fending off Far Eastern University in Game 1 of the 2024 Shakey’s Super League (SSL) National Invitationals best-of-three finals on Monday, July 15, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.The Lady Bulldogs recovered from a blip in the fourth set to claim a hard-earned win, 25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-13, over the Lady Tamaraws.Player of the game Bella Belen exploded with 26 points on 24 attacks and two blocks. Arah Panique provided support by chipping in 15 markers, while Erin Pangilinan scored 14 and Myrtle Escanlar contributed 13 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs to victory.FEU carried the momentum of their dominating fourth set to take a 7-5 lead in the fifth frame but Belen and Pangilinan sparked a 4-0 counterattack to push NU in front.The Lady Tamaraws knotted the count at 12, only for Mata to score two straight points to put the Lady Bulldogs at match point. After a failed attempt some 30 years ago, the province of Agusan del Sur has been named as the host of the Palarong Pambansa 2026.The development was announced following the passing of the Palarong Pambansa flag on to next year’s host.After nearly 60 years, Ilocos Norte is set to host the Palarong Pambansa once again in 2025. Cebu City Acting Mayor Raymond Garcia passed on the Palarong Pambansa flag to Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc during the grand closing ceremony at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).Earlier this year, Agusan del Sur submitted its bid to host the event, showcasing the D.O. Plaza Memorial Sports Complex, which boasts of world-class sporting facilities.The highlight of the sports complex is its 3,000-seat grandstand, rubberized track, football field with artificial grass, Olympic-sized swimming pool, air-conditioned courts for volleyball and basketball, and other amenities.Additional facilities include a 24-room hotel located within the main grandstand and a tennis court.The other Mindanao bidders who submitted their proposal to the Palarong Pambansa Board were the provinces of Misamis Occidental and Zamboanga City.The last time Mindanao hosted the Palarong Pambansa was in 2019 in Davao City.

Gymnast Carlos Yulo, boxer Eumir Marcial, and rower Joanie Delgaco will open the Philippine campaign at the Paris Games on Saturday, July 27, a day after the opening ceremonies of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games by the Seine River.Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino has high hopes that this year’s delegation will match the feat of weightlifter Hidilyn Dias, who captured the country’s first gold, or surpass the silver medals of boxers Carlo Paalam and Nesty Petecio, all achieved in 2020 Tokyo Olympics.“We are looking forward to Caloy, Eumir and Joanie to give the country that strong start in Paris. They are all prepared and inspired and in high spirits,” Tolentino stated in an interview with the Philippine News Agency.Delgaco, the Philippines’ first-ever female rower to make the Games, will be the first to see action in the quadrennial meet.The 26-year-old will race in the women’s sculls heats at 3:00 p.m. (Manila time) at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium, with the hopes of entering the semifinals scheduled on July 29.Meanwhile, gymnast Yulo and boxer Marcial will have their competitions running simultaneously starting at 9:30 p.m.The 23-year-old, who placed fourth in the vault event in Tokyo, will compete in the qualification round of the men’s gymnastics individual all-around at the Bercy Arena. The finals will be set on July 31.Yulo, the 2019 floor exercise world champion and 2021 vault king, is one of the Philippine bets to win a medal. The Philippine Men’s Under-19 National Football Team’s hope of advancing to the semifinals was diminished after Cambodia drubbed the former, 0-1, in the last Group A playing day of the 2024 ASEAN Under-19 Boys Championship Tuesday night, July 23, held at Gelora 10 November Stadium in Surabaya, Indonesia.The Philippines tallied a 1-3 win-loss record after the young Filipino booters secured a 2-0 victory against Timor-Leste on Saturday, July 20. Their win was fuelled by their superb composure and excellent game management following their 6-0 defeat to hometown bet, Indonesia, during the tournament’s opener.But their celebration was short-lived as they bowed to Cambodia in the final game, placing them at the rear of the Group A ranking.Meanwhile, Indonesia notched a 6-2 victory over Timor-Leste as they won Group A of the ASEAN U19 Boys Championship.The 2024 ASEAN U-19 Boys Championship is the 19th edition of the ASEAN U19 Boys Championship, organized by ASEAN Football Federation. 

Spain-based Filipino athlete John Cabang Tolentino has been breaking records for the Philippines as he takes the road to Paris one hurdle at a time.The 22-year old hurdler will compete in the men's 110m hurdles event of the Summer Games - his first-ever Olympics. He will join fellow hurdler Lauren Hoffman and pole vaulter EJ Obiena to be one of the three Philippine representatives in athletics that will compete in Paris.In the Philippine Athletics Championships held last May in Pasig, Tolentino set the national record for 110m hurdles at 13:37. Prior to this, he won the bronze in the Asian Indoor Championships in February where he clocked in 7.64 in the 60m hurdles, which also broke the national record. Tolentino also won the bronze medal with a result of 13.85 in the same event during the 2023 Southeast Asian Games that was held in Cambodia.Currently ranked 36th in the world, Tolentino will face a tough competition in the Summer Games as Tokyo gold medalist and 2023 World Championship silver medalist Hansle Parchment of Jamaica will once again compete in the 110m hurdles. Also, Tokyo silver medalist and three-time world champion Grant Holloway of Team USA will also compete in the 110 hurdles.Parchment won the gold in Tokyo as he clocked in 13.04, while Holloway settled for silver with 13.09. in the 2023 World Championships, Holloway had it at 12.96, while Parchment registered 13.07.The 22-year-old Filipino was ranked No.29 out of the 40 athletes when the Philippines Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) officially announced his qualification for the Olympics.Before this, Cabang started representing and playing for the Philippines in 2022. It was then during the Asian Championships of the following year when he made his mark as he finished fourth after clocking in at 13.56.Earlier this year, Cabang reset his personal and the Philippine record of the 110m hurdles during the National Championships in Pasig at 13.37. He also won gold during the meet.That is why for Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) Secretary General Jasper Tanhueco, Tabang, as well Hoffman and PH’s pole vault bet EJ Obiena, is in a good position to bring home Olympic gold.

Newly-elected PBA vice chairman Alfranchis Chua is pushed to take over the national basketball team executive duties as success has been inevitable to Gilas when he took over the chores.Chua as an executive in-charge for the national basketball team took the gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year after the 61 year drought of the country in claiming the championship of the quadrennial meet.Leading the call are PBA chairman Ricky Vargas, SBP president and Gilas head coach Tim Cone.Vargas said he witnessed himself on how Chua provided hand-on leadership that eventually led to the victory of the team, “A strong Gilas team benefits PBA and a strong PBA benefits Gilas so it’s mutually beneficial,” said Vargas who’s also SBP vice president. He added , “About 70 percent of Gilas is from PBA. We’re recruiting better players and now, naniniwala na tayong lahat that we can compete against the best in the world. We proved that in the OQT in Latvia. We’ve observed that when Gilas players return to the PBA, they’re more confident, they’re better because of the experience. A clear example is Chris Newsome who led Meralco to the Philippine Cup championship after a stellar performance in Hangzhou. We’re changing the Gilas culture and we’re earning a different respect from our opponents.”The PBA chairman also pointed out that Gilas is ranked No. 37 in the FIBA rankings but has recently defeated No. 6 Latvia, almost upsetting No. 12 Brazil and No. 23 Georgia. The national team also defeated No. 27 Iran in the Asian games classification round, upsetting the host team and No. 29 China in the semis, and beating No. 32 Jordan in a defensive-oriented finals to win the gold.Panlilio on the other hand said Gilas missed Chua in Latvia and he would’ve surely made an impact if he was present in that OQT (Olympic Qualifier Tournament). “We need my tokayo with Gilas,” he said. “He knows basketball more than I do. I told Alfrancis that I’ll be there for him, I’ll be on the admin side and he can take charge of the team like he did in Hangzhou. He knows how to encourage and motivate the players like nobody else. Alfrancis treats everyone equally, walang lumalamang, there is parity and a real sense of brotherhood.”Chua couldn’t join Gilas in Latvia because of his work commitments at San Miguel Corp. where his responsibilities are beyond sports as he also assists chairman Ramon S. Ang in special projects like the NAIA rehab, building a new airport in Bulacan and streamlining of tollway operations. But he said there will always be a big place in his heart for basketball. 

The 37th Thai King’s Cup Sepaktakraw World Championship will lose some of its lustre as Indonesia and Philippines, semifinalists in the regu event at the International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF) Sepaktakraw World Cup last May, have officially withdrawn from the tournament. ISTAF secretary-general Abdul Halim Kader announced that the Indonesian Sepaktakraw Association withdrew from the King’s Cup to focus on the 21st National Sports Week in the republic from September 8 to 20.However, the Philippine Sepaktakraw Association did not provide any reason for their withdrawal by the final registration deadline on July 14.

Kayla Sanchez and Jarod Hatch are on the mission to end a near-century long drought as they represent Philippine swimming in the 2024 Paris Olympics.Swimming is considered as one of the richest sources of medals for multi-sports events like the Olympics and with the Philippines making great use of the country’s geography to produce exceptional tankers. Teofilo Yldefonso started the trend of Filipino success in swimming - and in the Olympics overall - by being the first Filipino and Southeast Asian Olympic medalist.He nabbed two bronze medals when he bannered the country in men’s 200 meters breaststroke in both 1928 Amsterdam and 1932 Los Angeles Summer Games.Since then, however, the Philippines has been in a constant search of that next great swimmer, one that both Kayla Sanchez and Jarod Hatch would like to snap in Paris.

After heartbreaking losses from the women’s rowing and women’s judo, Kalya Sanchez kept the women's medal dream alive for the Philippines as she entered the semifinal round of women’s 100m freestyle in swimming.Sanchez swam to the top 16 with a time of 53.67, earning the country a slot in the semi-finals. She even ranked number four in heat 4.This is the second Olympic stint of Sanchez who previously represented Canada in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and won silver.The semifinals will be tomorrow, July 31, 3:25 a.m. PH time.

Swimmer Kayla Sanchez’s quest for a medal in the women’s 100 meter freestyle at the 2024 Paris Olympics came to an end when she failed to advance in the semifinals.Sanchez clocked 54.21 seconds in the second semifinal on Tuesday, July 30, (early Wednesday in Manila) at the Paris La Defense Arena, good for seventh in her group and 15th overall.Earlier in the day, the 23-year-old Filipina made her Olympic debut for the Philippines by delivering an impressive performance after finishing fourth-place in the heats.She registered 53.67 seconds, setting a new national record for the Philippines in the women’s 100m freestyle.Unfortunately, Sanchez missed the top-eight cutoff for the final and became the eighth member of the 22-strong Team Philippines to get eliminated.Gymnasts Aleah Finnegan, Emma Malabuyo, and Levi Jung-Ruivivar, fencer Samantha Catantan, judoka Kiyomi Watanabe, rower Joanie Degalco, and boxer Eumir Marcial all bowed out of medal contention in their respective events.

Chile’s table tennis player Zeng Zhiying proved that age is just a number by being the country’s representative in the Paris Olympics. She fulfilled the athlete’s dream of playing in the grandest stage at 58 years old.Despite bowing out early in the tournament, Zhiying still shone with her own spotlight because of her grit to finally reach her Olympic dream in a tourney where it’s filled with all sorts of players from different ages and backgrounds.Zeng made her Olympic debut on Saturday but fell short in the preliminary round where she lost to Lebanon’s Mariana Sahakian, 1-4.Before Zeng’s match, she made sure to thank her father and brother for the support they have given throughout her journey.
