PSC Chair Patrick Gregorio & POC Pres. Abraham Tolentino

The real story behind Team Philippines’ Aichi-Nagoya campaign

Four gold medals. Nine silvers. Sixteen bronzes. Twenty-nine medals in all.For Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, however, the nine silvers told another story. They represented medals that, in his view, could have easily changed the color of the Philippines’ Aichi-Nagoya campaign. The target was eight golds. The country won four. But Tolentino insists the eight-gold projection was never unrealistic.“I can say that hindi ko pwedeng ikahiya na kaya talaga yung eight [gold medals],” Tolentino said during the Team Philippines homecoming press conference in Manila yesterday. And his explanation was simple. “Doon lang tayo pipitas sa silver.”Team Philippines matched its four-gold haul from the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang and 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, with Carlos Yulo winning two golds in gymnastics, EJ Obiena taking pole vault gold and Jeus Yape capturing the country's historic virtual taekwondo gold. But the POC chief believes the tally could have been much higher. He pointed to Carlo Paalam's silver medal, as well as silver-medal finishes in jiu-jitsu and taekwondo, where he questioned the impact of officiating and referee decisions.“Kay Paalam, nakita niyo naman. 'Di ba? Kayo na humusga doon. That's a sure gold,” Tolentino said.He also cited two jiu-jitsu and taekwondo silver medalists who, according to his account, received zero scores from referees in crucial moments. Then there was MMA fighter Saclag.Tolentino believed the young Filipino simply became too aggressive in the final, but still saw something more valuable beneath the silver medal.“May nakatago yung silver niya,” he said.In other words, Tolentino was not looking at nine silver medals as nine failures to win gold. He was looking at nine opportunities that came agonizingly close to becoming victories.Tolentino went even further, pointing to Victoria Bossong's bronze in the women's 800 meters. Bossong topped the preliminary heats in 2:02 but clocked 2:04 in the final. For Tolentino, the performance raised another “what if.”“One bronze that should have been gold, with due respect to Victoria,” he said. His point was clear: the eight-gold projection was not simply a number pulled from thin air.Several Filipino athletes entered Aichi-Nagoya with legitimate medal chances. Some delivered gold. Others came home with silver. Some narrowly missed the podium altogether. That is the brutal mathematics of elite sport.Strip away the gold-medal argument for a moment and another number demands attention. It was the Philippines' biggest Asian Games medal haul in six decades, dating back to the 1966 Bangkok Asiad. That makes the conversation more complicated than simply asking why the country fell four golds short of its target. The more revealing question may be. How many of those 25 non-gold medals can Philippine sports eventually turn into gold? That is where the real work begins. Because silver means the athlete is already close.Bronze means the athlete has already broken through the highest level of continental competition. The challenge now is converting proximity into dominance.Meanwhile, PSC Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio sees reason for optimism beyond the medal count. He noted that several of the country's medalists are only 20 years old or younger. For Gregorio, that is one of the most encouraging takeaways from the Games.“Talagang mga bata. Talagang very promising,” he said, pointing to the development programs being built for the next generation. The next steps include grassroots initiatives, regional training centers and the Southeast Asian Games Youth Plus scheduled in December. That matters because medals at the senior level are rarely created overnight. They are built years earlier—in school gyms, local training centers, provincial competitions and youth programs. The athletes standing on the Asian Games podium today can become the foundation of the Philippine team of tomorrow. PSC Chair, Gregorio also had a message for the athletes amid the social-media criticism surrounding the four-gold haul.Don't let the noise become bigger than the achievement.“Tuloy-tuloy po ang suporta namin sa inyo,” Gregorio said. His message was particularly relevant in an era where every medal is immediately dissected online and every missed opportunity can become a target for criticism.Athletes see those comments. They read them. But their job is still the same: train, compete and represent the Philippines.Perhaps the biggest significance of Aichi-Nagoya is that many of the sports where the Philippines won medals are also part of the Olympic program. For Tolentino, that makes the Asian Games performance an important indicator heading toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The objective is no longer simply to collect medals at one continental Games. It is to build athletes capable of competing—and winning—on the world's biggest sporting stage. That requires sustained investment. It requires international exposure. It requires world-class coaching, sports science, facilities, recovery and competition opportunities. And it requires funding.Gregorio said the next crucial battle for Philippine sports will not take place inside an arena. It will take place in the halls of Congress.Sports officials are preparing to defend their budget before the Senate, with funding needed for the 2027 Southeast Asian Games, SEA Games Youth Plus, Asian Beach Games and the Los Angeles Olympics. The message from the PSC is straightforward:The athletes have shown what they can do. Now the system has to keep up.Under Republic Act No. 10699, an Asian Games gold medal carries a P2-million incentive, while silver medalists receive P1 million and bronze medalists P400,000.Those rewards recognize the athletes' achievements. But incentives alone cannot build an Olympic pipeline. That requires long-term investment. So, did Philippine sports fall short in Aichi-Nagoya?If the only measure is the eight-gold projection, then yes. But if the question is whether the country produced a competitive, medal-producing team capable of challenging Asia's best, the 29-medal haul paints a much broader picture.Four golds matched the country's recent Asian Games high. Nine silvers showed how close several athletes came to the top.Sixteen bronzes demonstrated the breadth of the country's medal-producing program. And the presence of young athletes on the podium suggests that this may not be the finished product. The goal should not be to celebrate four golds as though the work is done.Nor should it be to dismiss 29 medals as though nothing was accomplished. Both can be true: Philippine sports made progress—and Philippine sports still has a lot more to prove. The silver medals are not excuses. They are targets. The bronze medals are not consolation prizes. They are starting points. And the four golds are not the ceiling. They are the standard that the next generation must be challenged to surpass. Aichi-Nagoya is over. The road to Los Angeles has already begun.

Gilas Pilipinas Asian Games Gold Defense Crippled by Missing Stars - Tim Cone

TIM CONE SPEAKS OUT! GILAS' ASIAN GAMES GOLD DEFENSE CRIPPLED BY MISSING STARS.HOW CAN GILAS DEFEND ITS GOLD MEDAL WHEN SOME OF ITS BEST PLAYERS CAN'T EVEN SUIT UP?Gilas Pilipinas head coach TIM CONE revealed during the October 8 Senate Committee Hearing on Sports that the national team had hoped to assemble its strongest possible lineup to defend its historic Asian Games basketball gold. But those plans hit a major snag when overseas club commitments kept several Filipino stars from joining the squad!🚨 THE MISSING FIREPOWER:🏀 Kai Sotto🏀 Dwight Ramos🏀 AJ Edu🏀 Kevin Quiambao🏀 Carl TamayoAccording to Cone, Japanese and South Korean clubs did not release the players despite their willingness to represent the Philippines. And here's the frustrating part!THE ASIAN GAMES ARE NOT UNDER FIBA'S MANDATORY PLAYER-RELEASE RULES!That means overseas clubs are not automatically required to release their Filipino players for the tournament.Cone also questioned why Japanese and Korean national teams could field their players while Filipino imports competing in those leagues couldn't join Gilas. The result?GILAS FINISHED 9TH OUT OF 12 TEAMS, falling short in its bid to defend the Asian Games gold medal.OUR TAKE: YOU CANNOT EXPECT A NATIONAL TEAM TO COMPETE AT ITS HIGHEST LEVEL WITHOUT A RELIABLE SYSTEM FOR PLAYER AVAILABILITY!This is not simply about blaming overseas clubs. Those clubs have contracts, schedules, and professional obligations to consider. But Philippine basketball officials must also recognize that international success requires planning, coordination, and negotiations long before major tournaments begin.THE SOLUTION ISN'T JUST FINDING BETTER PLAYERS — IT'S MAKING SURE OUR BEST PLAYERS CAN ACTUALLY REPRESENT THE COUNTRY!The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, overseas clubs, and other basketball stakeholders need stronger agreements and better scheduling coordination.Because when the Asian Games arrive, Gilas should be preparing to beat Asia's best — not scrambling to complete its roster! And let's be clear:A GOLD MEDAL CANNOT BE DEFENDED BY TALENT ALONE. IT REQUIRES PREPARATION, COMMITMENT, AND COOPERATION!

EJ Obiena

EJ Obiena, this Asian Games gold medal was more than another victory

𝗘𝗝 𝗢𝗕𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗔 𝗜𝗦 𝗥𝗘𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗡. It felt like a fresh start. The two-time Olympian stamped his authority as Asia’s top pole vaulter on Tuesday, clearing 5.91 meters at Paloma Mizuho Stadium to win gold and establish a new Asian Games record. But the number on the scoreboard wasn't the biggest story.Obiena says he has found himself again. After admitting that he struggled to enjoy the sport following the 2024 Paris Olympics, the 30-year-old Filipino said his latest triumph brought back something he had been missing—the excitement, pressure and emotion that made him love competing.“It’s a bit of a reborn, a little bit of a different me.”And perhaps that is the most dangerous version of Obiena—not simply the athlete chasing heights, but the athlete who is having fun again. He acknowledged feeling somewhat empty in the period after Paris, saying he had lost some of the excitement he once felt in training and competition. Now, that fire is back. And suddenly, Los Angeles 2028 doesn't look so far away. 🇺🇸🔥Obiena said he sees no reason not to chase another Olympic appearance—as long as he remains healthy, qualifies and, most importantly, continues enjoying the sport. That last part might be the biggest development of all.Because when an athlete stops chasing medals and starts enjoying the climb again, the ceiling can get very high. For now, Obiena will take a well-earned break in Manila with his family before returning to training in Athens, Greece.Rest now. Then jump again.THE REBORN EJ OBIENA IS READY TO FLY.

Eya Laure Powers Choco Mucho, Sends Championship Warning to PVL Rivals

22 POINTS. 11 DIGS. 15 RECEPTIONS. ONE MVP. ONE MASSIVE STATEMENT.For years, the Choco Mucho Flying Titans have been a team overflowing with talent, passion, and championship potential. Yet somehow, the biggest prize has continued to slip through their fingers.Injuries. National team commitments. Exhaustion. Inconsistent lineups. There always seemed to be something standing between the Flying Titans and the championship breakthrough their passionate supporters have been waiting for.But this time, something feels different. With a healthy and complete roster operating under head coach Dante Alinsunurin's system, Choco Mucho is beginning to show what happens when talent, discipline, chemistry, and determination finally come together. And at the center of this transformation stands one player.Eya Laure: The New Face of Choco Mucho's Championship AmbitionsIf there were still questions about what Eya Laure could bring to the Flying Titans, her latest performance delivered a powerful answer. The former UST superstar and Alas Pilipinas standout erupted for 22 points, 11 excellent digs, and 15 excellent receptions, producing an outstanding all-around performance that earned her the first-ever Siklab Series Most Valuable Player award. But statistics alone cannot fully capture her impact. When the pressure intensified in the fourth and fifth sets, Laure refused to disappear. She attacked with confidence, defended with determination, and delivered the kind of leadership that championship-caliber teams desperately need. This wasn't simply a scoring performance. It was a statement of responsibility.Laure showed that she is capable of carrying the offensive burden while remaining committed to the defensive responsibilities that make a complete volleyball player. Her experience with Alas Pilipinas is becoming increasingly evident in her decision-making, composure, and willingness to embrace the biggest moments. And that should concern the rest of the PVL. Because a confident Eya Laure is dangerous.A confident Eya Laure surrounded by a healthy Choco Mucho roster is an entirely different problem.Coach Dante's System Is Finally Taking ShapeFor head coach Dante Alinsunurin, the victory offered a glimpse of what his system can produce when the team executes collectively.Choco Mucho's imposing net defense delivered 12 blocks, disrupting its opponent's offensive rhythm and creating crucial opportunities during the most demanding stretches of the match. The Flying Titans didn't simply rely on offensive firepower. They showed patience, defensive discipline, and the ability to make adjustments when momentum threatened to shift.Dawn Catindig's outstanding floor defense provided stability, allowing the team to extend rallies and turn difficult defensive situations into attacking opportunities. That kind of balance is essential for a team with championship ambitions.Power can win rallies. Defense and composure can win championships. And for perhaps the most encouraging part of Choco Mucho's performance, the Flying Titans demonstrated that they no longer need everything to go perfectly to remain competitive. They can absorb pressure. They can recover from mistakes. And most importantly, they can fight back.Rondina, Madayag and Laure: A Dangerous CombinationWhile Laure deservedly commanded the spotlight, Choco Mucho's supporting cast provided another reason for optimism.Sisi Rondina-Rosales, coming off the bench, delivered 12 points and brought her trademark energy and explosiveness to the court.Maddie Madayag contributed 11 points, adding another reliable offensive option and strengthening the team's presence at the net.Together, they represent the kind of depth that could make Choco Mucho difficult to contain.Opponents cannot afford to concentrate solely on Laure when Rondina can explode offensively and Madayag can punish defensive lapses.Add the defensive stability provided by Catindig, and the Flying Titans suddenly possess a more balanced combination of attacking options, floor coverage, and net protection. The chemistry is still developing, but the possibilities are becoming increasingly clear. This is no longer a team that needs one superstar to do everything. This is a team learning how to win together. Here is where the conversation surrounding Choco Mucho must change. For too long, the Flying Titans have been judged by their potential rather than their accomplishments. They have assembled talented rosters, generated enormous fan support, and produced memorable performances. But championship expectations demand more than exciting volleyball. They demand consistency. They demand accountability. They demand the ability to execute when the stakes are highest. And now that Choco Mucho has shown what a complete roster can accomplish, the standard must be higher.Injuries and scheduling difficulties are legitimate challenges, but championship teams eventually have to overcome adversity rather than be defined by it.This victory suggests that the Flying Titans are developing the mental toughness to do exactly that.Their response to a difficult start was particularly impressive.Instead of allowing frustration to dictate the outcome, they trusted their system, strengthened their defense, and relied on their leaders. That is the mentality championship contenders must possess. One outstanding performance does not guarantee a championship. The PVL is filled with talented teams capable of exposing weaknesses, forcing adjustments, and turning promising campaigns into disappointing endings.Choco Mucho still has work to do. Its players must remain healthy, sustain their defensive intensity, improve consistency, and continue developing the chemistry needed for the biggest matches. But there is no denying the significance of what the Flying Titans have shown.Eya Laure is emerging as a leader capable of influencing games in multiple ways.Rondina and Madayag provide additional firepower.Catindig gives the team defensive stability. And Alinsunurin is beginning to see his system translate into results. The talent is there. The experience is there. The depth is there. And perhaps most importantly, the fighting spirit is there. The question is whether the Flying Titans can sustain that level when the championship is actually on the line.Because in professional volleyball, potential creates excitement. For Eya Laure and Choco Mucho, the next chapter promises to be fascinating.

Alex Eala & Snow Badua

Snow Badua to Alex Eala: Fame is temporary. Your game is your foundation.

Sa showbiz, pag hindi ka na sikat sa tennis, bibitawan ka! Bigla-bigla, agad-agad! Real talk lang, iha!" — Snow BaduaVeteran sports journalist Snow Badua has delivered some straight-shooting advice to Filipina tennis star Alex Eala following a string of upset losses against lower-ranked opponents. His message? Don’t let showbiz attention and off-court distractions overshadow the work required to compete at the highest level.Badua invoked the experiences of Onyok Velasco and other Filipino athletes who found themselves in the spotlight, warning Eala that entertainment industry attention can disappear just as quickly as it arrives. It’s a blunt warning—but one that raises a bigger question about the pressures facing today's athletes.Eala has become more than a tennis player. She's a national sports sensation, a commercial draw, and a role model for the next generation. That visibility brings opportunities, but it also brings expectations.HERE'S THE REAL TALK: THE SPOTLIGHT CAN BUILD YOUR BRAND, BUT IT CAN'T WIN YOUR MATCHES.Eala has already made history for Philippine tennis. Now, the challenge is to keep growing, sharpen her game, and turn the attention surrounding her into fuel—not a distraction.Because in professional tennis, reputations don't earn ranking points. Baguio City Elevates Philippine Sports: World-Class Training Centers to Breed Future Champions

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is pushing forward with the construction of new sports facilities at its National Training Center inside Teachers' Camp in Baguio City!PSC Chairman John Patrick “Pato” Gregorio inspected the ongoing developments alongside Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, Philippine Football Federation President John Anthony Gutierrez, MVP Sports Foundation President Atty. Bill Pamintuan, and Executive Director Paolo Trillo. WHAT'S COMING TO BAGUIO?ARTIFICIAL FOOTBALL PITCH — A project under the Philippine Football Federation, targeted to be ready by November!3x3 BASKETBALL COURT — Supported by the MVP Sports Foundation to strengthen basketball development!PICKLEBALL COURT — Another facility backed by the MVP Sports Foundation to support the growth of emerging sports!BUT HERE'S THE BIGGER QUESTION: WHY SHOULD QUALITY TRAINING FACILITIES BE A LUXURY FOR FILIPINO ATHLETES?For years, the Philippines has celebrated international medals while many promising athletes continue training with limited equipment, inadequate facilities, and insufficient resources.WE CANNOT KEEP DEMANDING WORLD-CLASS RESULTS WITHOUT PROVIDING WORLD-CLASS PREPARATION! 💯This development in Baguio is a welcome investment in the future of Philippine sports. But building facilities is only the beginning.OUR TAKE: THE REAL SUCCESS OF THESE PROJECTS WILL BE MEASURED BY HOW MANY ATHLETES CAN ACTUALLY USE THEM — NOT JUST HOW IMPRESSIVE THEY LOOK AT THE RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY!These facilities must be properly maintained, accessible to developing athletes, and supported by qualified coaches and sustainable training programs. And most importantly, similar opportunities must reach athletes outside major cities.CHAMPIONS ARE NOT CREATED ON THE PODIUM. THEY ARE DEVELOPED THROUGH YEARS OF TRAINING, DISCIPLINE, AND OPPORTUNITY!Baguio's sports upgrade is a promising step toward building a stronger national sports system.BUILD THE FACILITIES. DEVELOP THE TALENT. SUPPORT THE ATHLETES. PRODUCE THE CHAMPIONS. SPORTS FANS, SHOULD THE PSC EXPAND THIS KIND OF SPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT TO MORE PROVINCES ACROSS THE PHILIPPINES?SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS!

Over 80 Teams Join Historic League as Province of Bulacan Embraces New Sports Movement

Pickleball has officially taken a major step forward in Bulacan with the launch of the All-Star Champions Pickleball League, drawing more than 80 clubs and teams to its inaugural tournament at the Capitol Gymnasium in Malolos City.Spearheaded by Bulacan Vice Governor Alexis Castro, the competition marks a significant milestone for the increasingly popular paddle sport, which has gained followers across the province's 20 municipalities and four cities. But beyond the growing number of participants, the tournament represents something more important.Bulacan is beginning to transform pickleball enthusiasm into an organized sporting community. For Vice Governor Alexis Castro, the launch of the league is not simply about identifying tournament champions. It is also about encouraging residents to embrace healthier and more active lifestyles.“We are very happy that we have launched this tournament,” Castro said, highlighting how pickleball has attracted professionals from different fields who find time to participate despite their demanding schedules. The vice governor also noted that the sport has encouraged some participants to become more physically active and improve their fitness. His remarks reflect one of pickleball's strongest attractions: its ability to bring together people with different levels of sporting experience.Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, offering a fast-paced game that appeals to players of different ages and athletic backgrounds. Its relatively simple rules and smaller playing court have helped attract beginners, recreational athletes, and former competitors from other racket sports. In Bulacan, the sport has become increasingly visible in local communities, recreational spaces, and commercial establishments. The arrival of the All-Star Champions Pickleball League provides a competitive platform for enthusiasts who want to take their involvement beyond casual games. With more than 80 participating clubs and teams, the tournament demonstrates the growing demand for organized pickleball competitions. The message is becoming clear: pickleball in Bulacan is no longer just a passing recreational trend. It is developing into a serious community sport.Unlike highly specialized competitive disciplines, pickleball can provide an accessible starting point for individuals who want to exercise, socialize, and experience organized sports. That accessibility has contributed to its popularity among working professionals and recreational athletes. And for Bulacan, the growing participation presents an opportunity to strengthen community sports development. The sport's influence is extending beyond traditional sports venues.According to Bulacan Provincial Tourism Officer Limuel Jan Lobederio, establishments such as coffee shops with pickleball courts and other recreational spaces have become emerging local attractions. These venues combine physical activity with social interaction, allowing residents to enjoy the sport while spending time with friends and family. The development also illustrates how pickleball can create opportunities for local businesses.Sports-related establishments may attract customers seeking recreational activities, while tournaments can generate additional demand for food services, transportation, and other local businesses.Although the economic impact of Bulacan's growing pickleball scene has yet to be fully measured, its increasing visibility suggests opportunities for sports-related tourism and entrepreneurship.Pickleball is not only bringing people onto the courts. It is also creating new spaces for communities to connect. The Philippines has recently seen growing interest in developing larger pickleball facilities and attracting international tournaments.Plans for major venues, including the proposed Helios Pickleball Center in Pasig City, reflect ambitions to strengthen the country's presence in the international pickleball community. But large facilities alone cannot guarantee long-term sporting success. The foundation of a competitive national program begins with accessible local tournaments and opportunities for ordinary players to develop their skills. This is where Bulacan's new league could play an important role.By bringing together clubs from different municipalities and cities, the competition can encourage stronger connections among players, coaches, organizers, and local sports communities.Regular tournaments can also help identify promising athletes who may eventually compete at higher levels. You cannot build a national pickleball powerhouse without first developing strong local sports communities. The All-Star Champions Pickleball League offers a practical example of how grassroots participation can support broader sports development. While the turnout for Bulacan's inaugural tournament is encouraging, sustaining that momentum will require continued effort. The long-term success of the league will depend on whether organizers can provide regular competitions, fair tournament structures, qualified officials, and opportunities for new players to participate.Youth development should also become an important priority.Introducing pickleball through schools and community sports programs could help younger athletes discover the sport and develop their abilities.Affordable access to courts and equipment will be equally important. If pickleball becomes concentrated only in private facilities or exclusive recreational clubs, its potential for broad grassroots development could be limited. The real measure of progress will not be how many people join the first tournament, but how many continue playing, improving, and competing in the years ahead. With more than 80 clubs and teams participating in its first major provincial tournament, Bulacan has demonstrated a strong base of community interest. Its growing network of players and recreational venues provides a foundation for future competitions. However, becoming a major center for pickleball will require more than enthusiasm. The province will need consistent tournament opportunities, player development programs, accessible facilities, and cooperation among sports organizations and local communities. The All-Star Champions Pickleball League could become an important starting point for those efforts. For Vice Governor Castro and the tournament organizers, the next challenge will be ensuring that the competition becomes a continuing platform rather than a one-time event. The rise of pickleball in Bulacan reflects a broader shift in Philippine sports participation.More Filipinos are exploring activities beyond traditional favorites such as basketball and volleyball. And as interest grows, communities are discovering that sports development does not always begin with massive stadiums or expensive international competitions.Sometimes, it begins with a small court, a paddle, a ball, and a group of people willing to play.Bulacan's inaugural pickleball league demonstrates how quickly that enthusiasm can develop into organized competition. From community courts to organized competition, Bulacan is emerging as a promising center for Philippine pickleball development. What started as a recreational activity among friends, professionals, and sports enthusiasts is rapidly developing into a province-wide sporting movement.THE FUTURE OF PHILIPPINE PICKLEBALL WILL NOT BE BUILT BY WORLD-CLASS FACILITIES ALONE. IT WILL BE BUILT BY THE COMMUNITIES THAT KEEP THE SPORT ALIVE.With more than 80 teams joining the inaugural tournament, Bulacan has made an encouraging start. Now comes the responsibility of turning participation into lasting opportunities for athletes and recreational players alike.FROM A LOCAL CRAZE TO A PROVINCE-WIDE MOVEMENT — BULACAN'S PICKLEBALL JOURNEY IS JUST BEGINNING.

GAB's 2027 budget moves forward Athlete protection and illegal gambling under the spotlight

PROFESSIONAL SPORTS NEED MORE THAN BIG EVENTS AND CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES — THEY NEED FAIR RULES, STRONG OVERSIGHT, AND ACCOUNTABILITY! 💯The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) has taken another step in the Senate budget process after Chairman Atty. Francisco J. Rivera appeared before the Senate Committee on Finance, Subcommittee D, on October 14, 2026.Presided over by Senator Bong Go, the hearing examined the agency's proposed 2027 budget and its responsibilities in regulating professional sports, overseeing professional games, and addressing illegal gambling. The proposed budget was deemed submitted at the committee level, marking another procedural step in the budget deliberations.🔥 BUT HERE'S THE BIGGER QUESTION: WILL STRONGER FUNDING TRANSLATE INTO BETTER PROTECTION FOR FILIPINO PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES?GAB plays an important role in maintaining standards across professional sports, including boxing and other regulated competitions.A STRONG SPORTS INDUSTRY CANNOT EXIST WITHOUT EFFECTIVE REGULATION!Professional athletes deserve proper safeguards, fair treatment, and clear procedures for addressing concerns.Meanwhile, illegal gambling and unlawful betting activities pose serious risks to public trust and the integrity of sporting competitions.FUNDING MATTERS. BUT RESULTS, TRANSPARENCY, AND ACCOUNTABILITY MATTER JUST AS MUCH! 🇵🇭As Congress continues reviewing the proposed national budget, attention should remain on how GAB can strengthen its services, enforce regulations, and protect the people who make professional sports possible.🏆 PROTECT THE ATHLETES. PRESERVE FAIR COMPETITION. STRENGTHEN SPORTS INTEGRITY!

Coach Nicole Tiamzon

More than a volleyball star: Nicole Tiamzon's legacy goes beyond the court

Photo: Spike and Serve From UP Lady Maroon to PVL champion, Nxled veteran Nicole Tiamzon proves true greatness isn't measured by trophies alone—but by the lives an athlete inspires. In Philippine volleyball, championships define careers, but a player's impact beyond the game can define a legacy. For veteran outside hitter Nicole Anne Zapanta Tiamzon, volleyball has never been just about powerful spikes, crucial points, or championship celebrations. It has also been about leadership, service, and giving young Filipinos the opportunity to dream. Now wearing the colors of the Nxled Chameleons in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), Tiamzon continues to build a career that stretches far beyond the playing court.A proven champion, grassroots sports advocate, and volleyball administrator, she represents a different kind of success story — one where athletic excellence and community service go hand in hand.Long before becoming a familiar name in professional volleyball, Tiamzon developed her skills and competitive character as a member of the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons. At UP Diliman, she balanced the demands of collegiate volleyball with her academic responsibilities, eventually earning a degree in Sports Science. Her collegiate experience provided the foundation for a professional career that would take her through several prominent Philippine volleyball clubs. She began her professional journey with the Foton Tornadoes in 2015 before joining the Perlas Spikers, where she played from 2017 to 2021.But it was during her stint with the Petro Gazz Angels from 2022 to 2025 that Tiamzon added major championship achievements to her résumé.She was part of the Petro Gazz organization that captured the 2022 PVL Reinforced Conference, the 2024 PNVF Champions League, and the 2024–25 PVL All-Filipino Conference titles. Those accomplishments strengthened her reputation as an experienced player who understands the discipline, teamwork, and composure required to compete at the highest level. In 2026, Tiamzon embarked on another chapter of her professional career after joining the Nxled Chameleons as part of the team's major rebuilding effort. The move reunited her with several former Petro Gazz teammates, bringing valuable championship experience to a squad seeking to establish itself as a serious contender in the PVL.For Nxled, adding an experienced veteran like Tiamzon represents more than acquiring another outside hitter. Her familiarity with high-pressure matches, championship preparation, and team dynamics provides an important presence in a developing lineup. As the Chameleons continue their pursuit of success, Tiamzon's leadership and experience could prove just as valuable as her contributions during matches.Beyond playing, she also serves as Akari Chargers team manager and Akari Cup Technical Director, helping develop the sport from another side of the game. But what makes her volleyball journey particularly remarkable is the work she has accomplished away from competition.Spike and Serve: Bringing volleyball dreams to underserved communitiesWhile many athletes focus primarily on building their professional careers, Tiamzon decided early on that her influence should extend beyond the sport's biggest arenas. In 2017, she founded Spike and Serve Philippines Inc., a nonprofit grassroots sports organization dedicated to introducing volleyball to children and young people in underserved communities. The initiative aims to make volleyball more accessible to aspiring athletes who may lack proper equipment, organized training, and opportunities to develop their abilities.Through grassroots activities conducted in different provinces, the program seeks to provide young Filipinos with opportunities to learn the sport while developing discipline, confidence, teamwork, and leadership. For children who dream of becoming professional volleyball players, access to basic training can be an important first step. And through Spike and Serve, Tiamzon has helped create opportunities for young athletes to take that step.Because sometimes, the most meaningful contribution an athlete can make isn't scoring the winning point — it's helping someone else discover their potential.Tiamzon's involvement in Philippine volleyball also extends into team management and sports development.Alongside her playing career with Nxled, she serves as team manager of the Akari Chargers, demonstrating her ability to contribute to the sport in different capacities. She also works as Technical Director of the Akari Cup, supporting efforts to provide organized volleyball competition and development opportunities. These responsibilities highlight her growing involvement in the administrative and developmental sides of the game. While competing as a professional athlete requires physical preparation and competitive focus, working in team management and grassroots development demands another set of skills — organization, communication, mentorship, and long-term planning.Tiamzon's willingness to embrace these roles reflects her commitment to Philippine volleyball beyond her own playing career.Professional athletes are often judged by statistics, individual awards, and championship trophies.By those measures, Tiamzon has already enjoyed a successful volleyball career. But her story offers another perspective on what sporting achievement can mean. Her journey from UP student-athlete to professional champion, grassroots advocate, and volleyball administrator demonstrates how an athlete can use experience and influence to help strengthen the sport. At a time when Philippine volleyball continues to attract growing attention, developing young talent remains essential to sustaining its progress. And athletes who invest their time and effort in grassroots programs can play an important role in building that future.Tiamzon is helping bridge the gap between the professional stage and the communities where future players may first discover the game. For Nicole Tiamzon, volleyball has provided opportunities to compete, win championships, build relationships, and establish a professional career. But through her work beyond the court, she has also found ways to give back to the sport that helped shape her life. Her career serves as a reminder that an athlete's influence does not end when the final whistle blows or the championship celebration concludes. It can continue through the young players they mentor, the communities they serve, and the opportunities they help create.Nicole Tiamzon has already proven she knows how to win championships. Now, she is helping others discover what it takes to become champions themselves. And perhaps that is her most meaningful achievement.Because trophies celebrate victories, but inspiring the next generation creates a legacy that can last far longer than a playing career.

Philippine Olympic Committee should stay out of NSA affairs - Puentevella

When sports leaders clash over power, one question must never get lost: Who is making sure the athletes win?The battle lines are being drawn in Philippine sports, and weightlifting president Monico Puentevella has delivered a pointed message to the Philippine Olympic Committee, especially to its president, Abraham Tolentino, to stop interfering in the affairs of National Sports Associations or NSA's.Speaking at a Senate sports hearing, Puentevella accused the POC of meddling in weightlifting and volleyball. He even linked alleged interference to the Philippines’ medal-less weightlifting campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympics, claiming that two potential medalists were affected. Those are serious allegations—and they deserve serious scrutiny. But beyond the accusations lies a bigger issue that Philippine sports can no longer afford to ignore: When sports leaders fight over authority, who ultimately pays the price? The athletes do.They are the ones who spend years training, sacrifice time with their families, endure injuries, and carry the country’s flag into international competition. They cannot afford to have their preparation and opportunities caught in the middle of leadership disputes.Another is the volleyball controversy, which adds another layer to the debate. Puentevella also pointed to concerns surrounding Alas Pilipinas, following complaints from players about support during the 2026 Asian Games. Meanwhile, POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino defended the organization, emphasizing its commitment to athletes and its role in shouldering expenses when government funding was delayed. Both sides have made their positions clear. The next step should be to establish the facts, examine the decisions made, and determine whether the athletes received the support they needed.Philippine sports does not need another power struggle disguised as a fight for its future. It needs accountability, coordination, and leadership that puts athletes ahead of organizational pride. The Philippine Sports Commission, meanwhile, earned praise from Puentevella for its support of weightlifting. The weightlifting chief remains optimistic that the sport can deliver another Olympic medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. That optimism is welcome. But Olympic medals are not built on confidence alone. They require long-term planning, quality coaching, scientific support, proper funding, and a stable environment where athletes can focus on competing—not on the politics surrounding their sport. If the POC believes its interventions are necessary, it should be able to explain them transparently. If national sports associations believe their independence is being undermined, they should present evidence and pursue accountability through the proper channels.Neither side should be above scrutiny. The real measure of leadership is not who controls Philippine sports. It is whether Filipino athletes are given every fair opportunity to succeed. With LA 2028 approaching, the country cannot afford to waste time and resources on disputes that leave athletes wondering who is truly in their corner. The mission should be bigger than any president, federation, or committee.Less politics. More preparation. Less infighting. More medals. And always, athletes first.

New leadership structure. Bigger responsibilities. One mission: Build a stronger Alas Pilipinas

PNVF SHAKE-UP! PHILIPPINE VOLLEYBALL FACES A MAJOR RESET — BUT WILL IT FINALLY DELIVER RESULTS?“We're restructuring the PNVF. What we did was we gave board seats to the different leagues then part sila ng decision making ng national team, with me as the chairman.” — Frank LaoThe Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF), under president Frank Lao, is rolling out major organizational reforms aimed at addressing long-standing problems involving player availability, scheduling conflicts, and coordination between volleyball leagues and national teams. And this time, the country's biggest volleyball stakeholders are getting seats at the decision-making table!WHAT'S CHANGING?UAAP, NCAA, PVL, AND SHAKEY'S V-LEAGUE — Representatives will participate in the National Team Commission, which Lao will personally chair.BETTER SCHEDULING COORDINATION — The PNVF has formally reached out to the PVL to align its domestic calendar with upcoming FIVB competitions.ALAS PILIPINAS RESTRUCTURING — Changes are expected for the men's and women's indoor national teams.BEACH VOLLEYBALL CONTINUITY — The national beach volleyball squads are expected to remain intact.GOVERNANCE REFORMS — The federation has submitted governance requirements to the FIVB, including conflict-of-interest safeguards and plans for an Athletes Commission.BUT HERE'S THE REAL QUESTION: WILL THESE REFORMS FINALLY END THE RECURRING PROBLEMS OF PHILIPPINE VOLLEYBALL?For years, Filipino volleyball fans have watched national teams deal with incomplete rosters, conflicting schedules, and limited preparation time.OUR TAKE: PHILIPPINE VOLLEYBALL DOESN'T NEED ANOTHER ROUND OF PROMISES. IT NEEDS A SYSTEM THAT ACTUALLY WORKS!Giving major leagues a voice is a promising step. But representation alone will not guarantee cooperation.REAL REFORM MEANS PLAYERS ARE AVAILABLE, TRAINING CAMPS ARE PROPERLY SCHEDULED, AND NATIONAL TEAMS ARE GIVEN ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE! The UAAP, NCAA, PVL, and other stakeholders have important roles in developing Filipino volleyball talent.Their cooperation could help establish a more sustainable national team program. But the success of this restructuring must ultimately be judged by what happens on the court.BETTER PREPARATION. STRONGER ROSTERS. CONSISTENT INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCES.Those should be the standards.🇵🇭 ONE COUNTRY. ONE NATIONAL TEAM PROGRAM. ONE COMMON GOAL!THE RESTRUCTURING HAS BEGUN. NOW IT'S TIME TO PROVE THAT PHILIPPINE VOLLEYBALL CAN MOVE FORWARD TOGETHER!

“Pinoy ako!” — Rondae Hollis-Jefferson sparks Gilas Pilipinas speculation

Could TNT Tropang Giga import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson become the next naturalized player for Gilas Pilipinas? The possibility has stirred excitement among Filipino basketball fans after the former NBA player declared “Pinoy ako!” during a postgame interview following Game 3 of the PBA Season 50 Governors' Cup quarterfinals. The statement immediately raised questions about whether the American forward would consider representing the Philippines in international basketball competitions. However, when members of the media directly asked Hollis-Jefferson about his interest in joining Gilas Pilipinas, the TNT reinforcement avoided giving a definite answer.“We appreciate you guys, thank you,” Hollis-Jefferson replied during the postgame press conference, playfully sidestepping the question. While his response neither confirmed nor denied any interest in playing for the national team, his declaration of affection for the Philippines has fueled discussions about his potential future with Gilas.A potential weapon for Gilas PilipinasKnown for his defensive intensity, versatility, athleticism, and ability to attack the basket, Hollis-Jefferson has established himself as one of the PBA's most formidable imports. His ability to defend multiple positions, create scoring opportunities, and contribute on both ends of the floor could make him an intriguing option for the Philippine national team. With Gilas Pilipinas continuously looking to strengthen its roster for major international tournaments, a player with Hollis-Jefferson's experience and skill set could provide additional flexibility. However, representing the Philippines would require him to meet the applicable citizenship and FIBA eligibility requirements. The national team already has naturalized players Justin Brownlee and Ange Kouame, while former San Miguel import Bennie Boatwright has also completed his naturalization process.Just a playful remark or something more? For now, Hollis-Jefferson's comments remain nothing more than an interesting moment that has sparked speculation. There has been no official announcement from the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) regarding any move to recruit the TNT import for the national team.Still, his familiarity with Philippine basketball, competitive mentality, and connection with Filipino fans make the possibility an appealing topic of discussion.Whether his “Pinoy ako!” declaration was simply an expression of appreciation or a hint of something more remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Hollis-Jefferson has captured the attention of Filipino basketball fans, and the possibility of seeing him wear the Gilas Pilipinas jersey is already generating conversation.Could Rondae Hollis-Jefferson eventually trade his TNT uniform for the Philippine national colors? For now, the answer remains unanswered — but the speculation is very much alive.

Beyond the Skywalker's shadow: How Jamie Lim built her own legacy of greatness

From graduating summa cum laude to winning SEA Games gold in the same year, the daughter of Philippine basketball legend Samboy Lim proved that greatness is not simply inherited — it is earned. Some athletes are born into greatness. Others spend their lives chasing it. But for Filipino karate champion Jamie Lim, carrying one of the most iconic surnames in Philippine sports was never just about continuing a family tradition. It was about creating a legacy she could proudly call her own.As the daughter of the late PBA legend Avelino “Samboy” Lim, famously known as “The Skywalker,” Jamie grew up connected to a name synonymous with basketball brilliance, spectacular athleticism, and Filipino sporting excellence. But rather than follow her father's footsteps onto the basketball court, she chose a different battlefield — the karate mat.And in 2019, she delivered two extraordinary achievements that would define her journey as both a scholar and an athlete. In June 2019, Jamie graduated summa cum laude from the University of the Philippines, earning one of the highest academic distinctions and demonstrating that excellence in the classroom could go hand in hand with athletic ambition.Just six months later, she traded academic recognition for international sporting glory.Competing before a home crowd at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, Jamie captured the gold medal in karate, delivering a memorable victory for the Philippines. From academic honors in June to a gold medal in December, she accomplished in one year what many spend a lifetime pursuing.Yet what made those achievements even more meaningful was how she connected them to her parents.“In June, I graduated summa cum laude like my mom, and now I'm a gold medalist like my dad,” Jamie proudly declared. Those words captured a remarkable family story — a daughter honoring both her parents while establishing an identity beyond their accomplishments.Samboy Lim was more than a basketball superstar. His breathtaking aerial moves, fearless playing style, and relentless competitiveness made him one of the most admired figures in Philippine basketball history. His nickname, “The Skywalker,” reflected a style of basketball that inspired generations of Filipino fans. For Jamie, however, greatness was never about becoming another Samboy Lim.It was about carrying the same determination, discipline, and competitive spirit into a sport where she could establish her own name. While her father soared above basketball defenders, Jamie found her own path to victory through karate — a demanding martial art requiring precision, patience, mental toughness, and years of disciplined preparation.Different sports. Different journeys. But the same pursuit of excellence. Jamie Lim's story carries a powerful message for young Filipino athletes.Being born into a celebrated sporting family may bring recognition, but it does not guarantee success.A famous surname cannot earn academic honors, survive exhausting training sessions, or win a gold medal. Those achievements demand personal sacrifice, commitment, and determination.Jamie demonstrated that an athlete does not have to choose between intellectual achievement and sporting excellence. Her success showed that both can be pursued with equal dedication. And perhaps that is what makes her journey so inspiring. She did not simply become known as the daughter of a basketball legend. She became Jamie Lim — a summa cum laude graduate, a SEA Games gold medalist, and a Filipino champion in her own right. The greatest tribute to a legendary parent is not necessarily to follow the same path, but to carry forward the values that made that parent extraordinary.Jamie Lim accomplished exactly that. Her father's legacy was written on the basketball court. Her own achievements were forged through academic excellence and karate.Together, they represent different chapters of a remarkable Filipino sporting family.Samboy Lim became a legend by reaching for the sky. Jamie Lim honored that legacy by reaching for greatness in her own way.And in doing so, she proved that while a legendary name may be inherited, a champion's legacy must be earned.
