Capital1 sealed its spot in the top three of Pool B after overcoming ZUS Coffee in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig on Tuesday, August 6.The Solar Spikers capped off their Pool B campaign with a 18-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-18 triumph over the still winless Thunderbelles. Riding high after a record-setting 45 points last week, Russian import Marina Tushova stuffed the statistical sheet with yet another explosive performance as she poured 32 points, along with 10 excellent digs, and nine excellent receptions to lead the Solar Spikers.Player of the Game Iris Tolenada set up a remarkable Capital1 stand with 21 excellent sets and five attack points.Apart from Capital1’s leading local scorer Des Clemente with 12 markers on eight attacks, two blocks, and a pair of aces, their two draft picks Jenya Torres and Leila Cruz came to Tushova’s aid on offense.Torres showcased her best performance yet of seven points, two off aces and 12 excellent digs, while Cruz contributed five markers. Victory, however, remained elusive for the Thunderbelles even with Japanese reinforcement Asaka Tamaru’s 22 attack points and Dolly Verzosa’s 12 markers on nine attacks, two blocks and an ace apart from 26 excellent receptions.Mitch Gamit and No. 13 pick rookie Sharya Ancheta each finished with six points. Capital1, who snagged huge wins over Petro Gazz and Choco Mucho, assured themselves of facing the three lower-ranked teams from Pool A in the second round, while ZUS Coffee finished the first round winless at 0-5 and will face the top three teams from Pool A.

PBA Champions San Miguel Beermen and Meralco Bolts will banner the Home-and-Away Season 2 of the EASL season opener on October 2 at the Mall of Asia arena.Reigning PBA Commissioner’s Cup Champions San Miguel will be going against the Korean Basketball League (KBL) runner-up Suwon KT Sonicboom, while Philippine Cup champs Meralco will face the new team Macau Black Bears as the league opens its season on Philippines soil for the very first time.The group stage is scheduled from October 2, 2024 to February 12, 2025. Then, the Final Four championship weekend will be from March 7-9, 2025. Three more playdates will be held in the country.Another double header will be played on November 13 at the PhilSports Arena. It will feature the game between the Beermen against P.League+ runner up Taoyuan Pilots while the Bolts is scheduled to take on KBL’s champion, KCC Egis.On January 15, 2025, SMB will face another new team in Hong Kong Eastern Dragons Arena while Meracl will meet the B. Far Eastern University earned its first win under Raiza Palmera-Dy’s mentoring after denying University of the East’s comeback attempt, 62-52, at the UAAP Season 87 Collegiate Women’s Basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday, September 18.The Lady Tamaraws held their ground despite missing Josee Kaputu, who suffered an ACL tear in her left knee during their game against National University last Saturday.FEU established a pivotal run of 43-21 at halftime courtesy of Maxene Dela Torre, MJ Manguiat, Shane Salvani, and Rea Ong, who combined for eight three-pointers as opposed to UE who missed all of their 11 attempts after grappling with their perimeter shooting. Despite stumbling in the first half, the Lady Warriors pushed through and withstood the might of their opponents in the fourth quarter, propelled through the efforts of Rachel Lacayanga, Dominique Vacalares, Kate Cruz, and Aliyah Ronquillo.It was almost but not quite for UE as their late-game surge proved to be too late when Salvani’s free throws with 13.1 seconds left sealed the victory for FEU.

The PLDT High Speed Hitters are off to a winning start in Pool A of the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference, with the Creamline Cool Smashers absorbing a rare opening-day loss on Tuesday, July 16, at PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.The Rald Ricafort-coached squad snatched a 16-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-19, 15-12 triumph against undermanned Creamline.Russian import Lena Samoilenko was the standout in the clash and took charge of the offense after tallying 34 points on 32 attacks and two aces, while Kath Arado displayed brilliance by protecting their side of the taraflex with 24 digs.Completing PLDT’s setup was Kim Fajardo, who made the plays after tallying 19 markers.The High Speed Hitters played without Savannah Davison, who is out due to a knee injury that would sideline her indefinitely. Also, not available were Rhea Dimaculangan, who is on leave, and Dell Palomata, who is training with the national team.“That was absolutely a hard-fought win. That is what we prepared for, to be mentally prepared in this type of competition,” Ricafort told the media during the post-game press conference.“We know it is troublesome to have fewer players available; even the Creamline team got inadequate numbers of players, but they still proceeded with the match. Definitely a good win for us,” he added.The Cool Smashers, on the other hand, played without stars Alyssa Valdez and Tots Carlos, while Jema Galanza’s absence was expected due to her commitment to Alas Pilipinas.Creamline American reinforcement Erica Stauton led her pack with 20 points and 10 receptions, while Bernadeth Pons and Michele Gumabao added 18 and 16 points, respectively.This marks the first time that Creamline lost a tournament opener in the PVL since 2019.Up next for PLDT is Galeries Tower on Saturday, July 20, while Creamline matches up with Farm Fresh on the same day.
